ASCO staff were busy in June and July promoting the Eye Opener Sessions (EOS) program, in addition to the Optometry Gives Me Life campaign, at both the AOA in Minneapolis and NOA in Columbus. The staff gave away Eye Opener portable phone chargers, “Seymour” the Eye Guy pins, and stickers at Optometry’s Meeting.

Bisant A. Labib OD, FAAO, Diplomat AAO, is the new Dean of the Pacific University College of Optometry, effective July 14.

Save for a study abroad year and a doctoral residency, Pacific University has always been home for Fraser Horn ‘00, OD ‘04.
He grew up on the Forest Grove Campus around his mother, Betty, who was the longtime administrative assistant in the Social Sciences Department. He earned his undergraduate degree and doctorate at Pacific before embarking on a 20-year career on the faculty of the College of Optometry.

Dr. Lewis Reich, SCO President, was named a finalist for the Memphis Business Journal’s 2025 Health Care Heroes Awards.

Through the collaboration of Malia McDowell, Class of 2026, and dedicated UAB School of Optometry alumni, a vital new service was launched and sustained at the Community of Hope Health Clinic (CHHC). CHHC stands as a beacon of care for residents of Shelby County who live at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines and lack access to insurance. In the summer of 2024, the clinic expanded its offerings to include optometric care, providing fully dilated eye exams to individuals in need.

Christopher J. Quinn, OD ‘85, FAAO, has been inducted into the National Optometry Hall of Fame.
Dr. Quinn was recognized for his dedicated advocacy to the profession throughout his 40-year career.

The Ocular Surface Disease Educators Special Interest Group (SIG) held its first meeting this July. Dr. Anna A. Tichenor, Assistant Professor at Indiana University School of Optometry and Director of the Dry Eye Clinic at Atwater Eye Care Center is the current Chair of the group.

In early 2025, the American Board of Optometry (ABO) introduced a new Student Candidate program for third-year (second semester) and fourth-year students. The program builds upon our resident outreach and offers students an opportunity to engage in the board certification process early and at a significantly reduced fee.
