Latinos en Optometry, Zeiss to Host Panel Discussion on Diversity and Inclusion in the
Future of Eye Care at Vision Expo West

As the field of optometry continues to evolve to better reflect the diverse communities it serves, Latinos en Optometry and ZEISS will host a timely and important panel discussion focused on how diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are shaping the future of the profession.

The panel, titled Prospects for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging in Optometry, will take place on Thursday, September 18, from 10:15 am to 10:45 am on the Main Stage in the Exhibit Hall at Vision Expo West. The session will explore current initiatives and strategies to reduce disparities in access to care, increase representation in optometric education and leadership, and empower both emerging and established professionals to drive equity within the field.

Ashley Mills, Chief Executive Officer of The Vision Council, will moderate the discussion. Featured panelists include:

  • Howard Purcell, OD, FAAO, Diplomate and FNAP, President and CEO of the New England College of Optometry and Co-Founder and Board Member, Latinos en Optometry
  • Ruth Shoge, OD, MPH, FAAO, Chief Diversity Officer and Associate Clinical Professor, Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry and Vision Science
  • Maricruz Garza, Regional Business Development Manager, Carl Zeiss Vision, Inc.

“Optometrists, alongside the broader eye care industry, have a vital role to play in driving meaningful and lasting change,” said Gary Rosenblum, president and CEO of Zeiss Vision Care US. “This discussion will spotlight the strategies, challenges, and commitments needed to create a more inclusive and representative profession.”

This free event is open to students, practicing professionals, and all members of the eye care community who are committed to creating a more equitable future for optometry.
