The 2013 AAPA Awards Programs (Communications, Facilities Engineering, Environmental Improvement and Information Technology) are open for submissions. Please note that the deadline for 2013 AAPA Communications Awards Program entries is Wednesday, May 1, and that judging will commence shortly thereafter, so late entries may not be accepted. Applications in the Facilities Engineering, Environmental Improvement and Information Technology Awards are due June 1 at AAPA headquarters.

Dukal Corporation, a supplier of disposable medical products, has chosen the Port of Savannah as its major port of entry and established new distribution center space in Savannah’s Foreign Trade Zone. Dukal Corporation provides bandages, surgical supplies and hygiene items for the medical, dental, health spa and veterinary clinic markets.

Port of Greater Baton Rouge
BP supertanker British Pride made history when it called the Port of Long Beach in December as the deepest oil tanker to berth at a California port. Laden with 1.79 million barrels of crude oil, the tanker came in at a draft depth of 65 feet.

Janna Sidley has been named general counsel for the Port of Los Angeles. In that role, she supervises the city attorney’s port operations and serves as in-house counsel to port management and the Los Angeles Harbor Commission.

Bill Johnson, chairman of the Florida Ports Council and the director of PortMiami, was recognized by Gov. Rick Scott in the March 5 State of the State address to the Florida legislature in Tallahassee. During the speech, the governor stressed the importance of Florida’s ports to economic development.

PHI Horizon Lines will begin a weekly vessel service between the ports of Philadelphia and San Juan on April 11. The service will bring 52 vessel calls annually to Packer Avenue Marine Terminal (PAMT), which is operated by Holt Logistics subsidiary Greenwich Terminals, LLC, under lease from the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority.

The population of a native San Diego Bay fish species is beginning to recover, thanks to a program financed in part by the Port of San Diego's environmental fund. On March 8, more than 7,000 white seabass were released into San Diego Bay. The fish had been raised in special pens located on port land at the Grape Street Pier.

Mayor Edwin M. Lee joined port officials last month in celebrating first phase completion of the Port of San Francisco’s James R. Herman Cruise Terminal at Pier 27. The partially completed facility will be used as headquarters later this year for the 34th America’s Cup Races. After the America’s Cup event, the port will complete Phase 2, making the terminal operational for cruise ships and creating a 2.5 acre public park known as the Northeast Wharf Plaza in 2014.

The Port of Seattle Commission has selected Courtney Gregoire to fill the seat vacated by Gael Tarleton. Ms. Gregoire joins the port commission after serving as the director of President Obama’s National Export Initiative and other high-profile work to support economic development in Washington and across the country.

The Port of South Louisiana was recently awarded a $50,000 grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline & Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA) to provide marine pipeline safety outreach to the Lower Mississippi River maritime community. The grant is being administered by Lester Millet III, the port’s policy and planning director and will fund a DVD, website and miscellaneous printed material (i.e. tri-fold brochure, poster, carded checklist and calendar).

Fitch Ratings has affirmed the Tampa Port Authority’s (TPA) credit rating of "A" and pronounced its outlook "stable." Fitch Ratings cited the authority’s revenue and business line diversification, relatively low debt service levels and the economic conditions in Hillsborough County as key factors in its rating.
