The Port of South Louisiana was recently awarded a $50,000 grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline & Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA) to provide marine pipeline safety outreach to the Lower Mississippi River maritime community. The grant is being administered by Lester Millet III, the port’s policy and planning director and will fund a DVD, website and miscellaneous printed material (i.e. tri-fold brochure, poster, carded checklist and calendar).

Crisscrossed by 72 pipelines, South Louisiana is the point of origin of Capline (800,000 barrels of oil per day) and the terminus of the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (500,000 barrels daily). Approximately one-fourth of the oil that enters the port is transported via pipeline. In 2012, about 69.4 million short tons, or 450 million barrels, of crude oil cargo was shipped through the port.
