America’s waterborne commerce grew in 2011 for the second year in a row, with total volume up 2.1 percent from the year before to almost 2.4 billion short tons, according to data compiled and reported by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Waterborne Commerce Statistics Center in New Orleans. That was short of the record 2.6 billion tons reached in 2006 and trailed the 10-year, 2001-2010 average by 2.9 percent.

Port of Beaumont Commissioner H. M. “Henry” Nix Jr., announced Jan. 28 that he would not be running for reelection, signaling the end of his 30 years’ service to the port. His term current ends May 20, 2013.

Stephen B. Fitzgibbons is the new director of finance at the Port of Brownsville. He succeeds Debby Duke, who is now the port’s director of administrative services. Mr. Fitzgibbons, whose first day on the job was Jan. 31, oversees the finance department and is responsible for a $15 million budget.

Haier America has chosen Georgia as its logistics hub serving the Southeast United States. The global firm will move its home appliances and air conditioners through its distribution center located at the Interstate Centre in Black Creek, just outside of Savannah.

The Harbors Division of the Hawaii Department of Transportation (DOT) has begun a $7 million harbor terminal improvement project at Kawaihae Harbor, as part of Gov. Neil Abercrombie’s New Day Work Projects. The project will include paving 3.1 acres of land adjacent to Pier 2. The container yard will be used by shippers to load and store containers. The project also includes associated infrastructure work, such as area lighting, fire protection and drainage.

The government of Honduras has awarded International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) a 30-year concession for the design, financing, construction, maintenance, operation and exploitation of a specialized container and general cargo terminal at Puerto Cortes in Honduras.

The Port of Hueneme leads the nation in its proportional drawdown of federal port security grant dollars, 66.14 percent, according to a report by the U.S. Coast Guard’s Port Security Sector Evaluation Division (CG-PSA-2). To date the port and its security stakeholders have received grants totaling $11.7 million from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the state of California for security enhancements.

Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC) has purchased a stake in the leasehold for the marine terminal operations at Pier T, the largest container terminal in the Port of Long Beach. It is the second such move by a leading shipping company in recent months.

Jeff Miles has been appointed acting executive director of the North Carolina State Ports Authority (SPA), effective immediately. Mr. Miles joined the SPA in 2005 as chief operating officer and was promoted to deputy executive director in 2012. In those roles, he was responsible for operations at the ports of Morehead City and Wilmington, and inland terminals in Charlotte and the Piedmont Triad at Greensboro.

The North Carolina Council of State on Feb. 5 voted to approve a lease that gives the go-ahead to a public-private partnership seeking to construct a cold storage facility at the Port of Wilmington. The lease had been approved the week before by the board of the North Carolina State Ports Authority (SPA).

The Port of Windsor reports handling 5,444,655 metric tons of cargo in 2012, an increase of 7.5 percent it credits to a “surge in construction aggregate shipments due to an increased demand from major construction projects, particularly the Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway.”
