The ASCO Residency Directors Professional Group held its inaugural retreat on April 10-11, 2025, at Marshall B. Ketchum University, Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO-MBKU). This event brought together Residency Directors from the schools and colleges of optometry to discuss key issues, share insights, and foster professional development. The retreat was co-chaired by Dr. Caroline Pate (UABSO) and Dr. Judy Tong (SCCO-MBKU) and was generously sponsored by Dompé, Johnson & Johnson, and EssilorLuxottica.
 
ASCO’s 2024-25 Annual Student Data Report was released in April 2025 and contains information on student enrollment, demographics, financial aid and graduates.

The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship (ASF) of Alabama honored UAB School of Optometry Associate Professor Janene Sims, OD, PhD, as its 2025 Outstanding Academic Mentor for the exemplary commitment to her ASF Fellow mentee.
 
Using a new technique called “Oz,” vision researchers at the Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science have been able to "trick" the eye into seeing images, videos and even a brand-new color — a profoundly saturated peacock green that they named “olo.” Their paper, "Novel Color Via Stimulation of Individual Photoreceptors at Population Scale," was recently published in the journal Science Advances.
 
Everything that could go wrong with her eyes did. In high school, Jennifer Tsai developed a painful corneal ulcer, only to later experience something even more rare: bilateral retinal tears, a potentially sight-threatening condition in both eyes. It was this experience that made her painfully aware of just how fragile and vital vision truly is. 
 
If an optometrist doesn’t happen to have a “central obscuring strip,” to conduct the Turville Infinity Balance Test, a coat rack will do just fine.  
 
American Optometric Association President Dr. Steven Reed received the honorary Doctor of Ocular Science degree during Southern College of Optometry’s (SCO) annual commencement ceremonies in May. Dr. Reed, a 1995 SCO graduate, previously served on SCO’s Board of Trustees, including as Board chair. He is a former president of the Mississippi Optometric Association and active with his AOA leadership. Presenting the degree was Dr. Bart Campbell, SCO’s Vice President for Academic Affairs.
