The estimated ready mixed concrete produced in April 2018 is 30.2 million cubic yards, 9% higher than that in April 2017. The estimated production in the U.S. for 2018 through April is 100 million cubic yards, 2.6% higher than that during the same period in 2017.

Ready mixed concrete production is estimated from cement shipments reported by the U.S. Geological Survey. More detail is available for NRMCA members here.

With LEED v4 starting to be discovered in building construction documents and specifications, material suppliers are investing in environmental product declarations (EPD). One such material supplier is NRMCA Producer member Graniterock, which now can offer an EPD for aggregate products in addition to ready mixed concrete product EPDs.

Moving to cut energy use in new homes by more than 50 percent, the California Energy Commission has adopted energy-efficient building standards that will require solar photovoltaic systems starting in 2020. The standards, which are the first in the nation to require solar, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an amount equivalent to taking 115,000 gas-fueled cars off the road.

Important - Time Sensitive - Must Read: NRMCA is updating the Product Category Rule (PCR) for concrete and is seeking comments from stakeholders, including concrete producers and product suppliers. Product Category Rules (PCR) define the criteria for producing an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). PCRs have a shelf life of five years and the current PCR is expiring in 2018. Over the past 18 months, NRMCA, in collaboration with the Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF) and key industry participants, has revised the PCR to meet changes in international standards.

NRMCA members are urged to tell the International Code Council (ICC) to vote no on mass timber proposals that threaten public safety. This is an extremely critical issue and NRMCA needs your help in providing a public comment for Disapproval on G108-18, a proposal that would allow Cross Laminated Timber to be used in up to 18-story buildings in the International Building Code.

The Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling last week that nonunion workers cannot be forced to pay fees to support unions underscores the importance of the Senate confirming President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee.

Earlier this year, legislation was introduced in both the House and Senate to promote union interests at the expense of employees’ and employers’ rights.

Working with the Colorado Ready Mixed Concrete Association's Western Market Committee chaired by Holly Martin of United Companies (a CRH and NRMCA Producer member), NRMCA Vice President, Local Paving, Don Clem provided a lunchtime seminar on the proper design and construction of concrete trails. The seminar was attended by representatives of United Companies, Whitewater Building Materials, City of Grand Junction, Mesa County and several concrete contractors. Trail construction is an important concrete market in Colorado, as projects can be funded through proceeds from the Colorado Lottery. Clem also visited with Mesa County engineers to review how best to repair an existing trail project.
