Association & Industry News
![]() Throughout August, NRMCA will spotlight the incredible people of our industry, including those who make the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association run, from behind-the-scenes staff and standout participants in our Developing Industry Leaders (DIL) program. NRMCA encourages its members to celebrate their employees! Whether it’s a shout-out, lunch or simple thank you, August is a great time to show your appreciation. The following is the list of the latest NRMCA Producer and Associate members that have joined or rejoined the Association. On behalf of the entire staff, we thank them for their support of the ready mixed concrete industry. Producers: Associates:
More than 365,000 square feet of ready mixed concrete is being placed at Lafayette High School (seen here) in the Rockwood School District, the largest district in the St. Louis County public school system, The school district has been a big proponent of concrete and was the site of the first Concrete Parking Lot Overlay, at Crestview Middle School in 2006, with many more following afterward, including the huge Marquette High School Concrete Parking Lot Overlay, also over 350,000 square feet, and the site of a major hard hat tour and demonstration during construction. "This is a great example of our philosophy to 'Change the Default' of major asset owners in Missouri and Illinois," said Oliver "Skip" Dulle of the Concrete Council of St. Louis. "We are also working with contractor members to support consideration of concrete parking lots by owners for new construction, with growing success." NRMCA recently celebrated the success of the Mississippi Concrete Association’s (MCA) Day of Concrete seminars held on July 22 in Oxford and July 24 in Gulfport. The events brought together a diverse group of industry professionals, including architects, contractors, engineers and public works employees. Attendees at both events earned six hours of continuing education credit. NRMCA staff played key roles, with Michael Wymant, vice president of building innovations, and Luke McHugh, PE, senior director of local paving, leading informative presentations. The curriculum covered a wide range of topics from foundational knowledge in Cement 101 and Concrete 101 to more specialized subjects like ACI 330: Concrete Parking Lots and the application of Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF). MCA Executive Director Joel Waters highlighted the events' importance, stating, "from roads and bridges to houses and schools, Mississippi needs concrete. These events are a great way to spread the word!" For more information, contact Michael Wymant at mwymant@nrmca.org. The August edition of the Workforce Development Committee (WDC) newsletter is available here. Check it out for program updates, upcoming dates, calls to action and personnel announcements.

While Members of Congress head back to their districts and states in August, NRMCA’s Government Affairs team continues to meet with key congressional offices and stakeholders on the FRESH Act, legislation that would allow states to apply state weight limits to federal roads within their state for perishable products, effectively streamlining weight limits within states and allowing loaded mixer trucks to access federal roads at state weight limits, including weight limits allowed under state tags or permits. In addition to ready mixed concrete, the legislation would benefit agriculture and farm products as well as the asphalt and logging industries. Consequently, the FRESH Act is supported by a broad coalition of organizations, including the American Farm Bureau Federation, American Wood Council and the National Asphalt Pavement Association. This policy has emerged as a top NRMCA priority as Congress looks at passing surface reauthorization legislation next year; NRMCA members are encouraged to come to Capitol Hill and lobby on this issue at this year’s Legislative and Policy Forum (see related E-NEWS item directly above). For more information, contact Andrew Tyrrell. Government Affairs

NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Greg Halsted recently accepted an invitation to become a member of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Standing Committee on Concrete Pavement Materials. The committee is concerned with research and innovation related to the selection, proportioning, testing, characterization, modeling, design and production of cementitious materials, concrete and their additives to improve performance, durability and quality control. TRB standing committees are responsible for various tasks that contribute to the advancement of proper transportation practice, including proposing and sharing research, sponsoring workshops and symposia while keeping the transportation community informed and engaged with the latest developments and challenges in the field. Halsted’s three-year term as a committee member will help ensure that ready mixed concrete continues to be properly positioned and discussed as the material of choice for our nation’s pavements.
