RICHMOND, Virginia — Recent studies by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, have shown that traffic deaths from red-light-running crashes go up nearly a third after cities turn off cameras designed to catch motorists in the act. Researchers compared trends in annual crash rates among 14 cities that ended their red-light camera programs against 29 cities in the same region that continued their camera program.
