Virginia Asphalt Association is pleased to announce that on April 29, Trenton M. Clark was named the new Executive Vice President of the Association. Trenton has been with VAA since January, 2011 as the Director of Engineering. For the last year, he and Richard Schreck (retired) shared the responsibilities of running VAA to ensure a smooth transition. "Richard left VAA in a great position to excel in the future. Through his efforts and leadership, we are able to pursue new areas such as the Virginia Education Center for Asphalt Technology (VECAT) and the Asphalt Expo. We will not be able to replace Richard, but through a dedicated staff and strong membership involvement we will continue the tradition of providing outstanding service to the asphalt industry in Virginia," said Clark.
On May 3, 2017 VAA hosted the first Richard J. Schreck Scholarship Golf Tournament. This event is one of three regional tournaments scheduled for 2017. It took place at the Riverfront Golf Club in Suffolk; the weather was awesome and everyone had a great time, especially the winners! First place went to the team of Del Baker, Dave Corbin, Charles Tamayo, and Ed Manley from Virginia Paving. The second place team was Mark Range, Billy Powers, Steve Beeles and Steve Walters. Third place was won by Bobby Hedrick, Kevin Jones, Evan Spivey and Shawn Howell. Ben Miller and Steve Walters walked away with closest to the pin prizes and Bobby Hedrick and P.T. Going made the longest drives.

VAA is excited to offer members an opportunity to participate in a lab testing Round Robin. This will include a gyratory sample, a rice, and a furnace with gradation. Participants in the Round Robin will receive their samples soon, and all they have to do is run the appropriate tests and send the results back to the specified facility. Once all the test results are received, VAA will let each participant know how their results compared to the other laboratories in Virginia.
VAA is very conscience of the need for privacy during this process. All samples will be coded at delivery. Results will be reported in a coded format and all names will be kept private to protect the participants. This comparison will give each participant confidence in their abilities and equipment or allow them to discover where they may need to look at their operation for adjustments. We are producing samples now, so if you are interested in participating, please contact Mike Dudley at for registration and additional information.

The Virginia Asphalt Association held its 66th Annual Meeting at The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia on April 26-28, 2017. This meeting was significant in that it marked the retirement of Richard Schreck as Executive Vice President. Richard had served in the role since September 1981. He was the longest-serving state asphalt association executive. More than 200 people joined Richard for his retirement banquet and after party on Thursday April 27.
