Up Front

The Fundamentals of Asphalt+New Technology, and Paving and Compaction seminars will take place October 9/10, 23/24, 30/31, and November 7/8. Day one is calibrated for engineers, designers, and city managers. The agenda will kick off with Planning for Success which covers the key topics you should discuss at the Pre-Paving Meeting to ensure a successful project followed by educational modules covering Asphalt Binders, Asphalt Aggregates, Asphalt Mix Design, and Asphalt Pavement Mix Types.

After breaking for lunch, day one resumes with the New Technology portion of the program. Representatives from TXAPA will be on hand to present an in-depth look at the most current technology affecting asphalt pavement outcomes including the design and use of Super Pave Mixes, the Overlay Test Procedure, the Hamburg Test Procedure, and the Shear Test Procedure.

On day two, Larry Welch will be on hand to deliver his famous all-day Paving and Compaction seminar. Welch, a TxDOT veteran and certification instructor at the Hot Mix Asphalt Center in Buda, Texas will share his over thirty years of experience during this asphalt pavement workshop. Day two is geared to the "boots on the ground," targeting road crews, field supervisors, and superintendents.

Participants will learn:

  • Safety: what is a safe working environment and how do you create one?
  • Planning for success: the Pre-Paving Meeting and other communication strategies
  • Milling and prep: surface preparation for successful overlays
  • Paving material handling: handle materials safely and efficiently from stockpile to project
  • Paver principles: best practices and proper methods for quality paving
  • Compaction: best practices and optimal techniques for compaction

Two-Day Seminar: Fundamentals of Asphalt+New Technology with Paving and Compaction

This year’s Transportation Short Course will be the 92nd such meeting in the Texas Department of Transportation’s history. Both TxDOT and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) are proud of this long-standing record of collaboration and cooperation. Over the years, the Short Course has provided a unique opportunity to exchange important technical information that improves transportation in Texas. TxDOT planners and their TTI colleagues are developing an excellent program, and we are confident the conference will be of value to all who attend.

Technically Speaking

This year's annual meeting was hands-down our most successful yet! We had approximately 600 attendees, which is 100 more than we have ever had! We raised 501k for the TXAPA Scholarship Program exceeding last year's total by a whopping 200k!

On top of it all, we were supported by members like you who sponsored events, donated to the Live and Silent Auction, bid on items, and in general graced us with your presence. It wouldn't be TXAPA without YOU!

We were also fortunate to have had our Partners in Quality with us representing another robust turnout for TxDOT.

Finally, we extend a very special THANK YOU to Dr. Jon Epps of TTI. Once again, his work as emcee brought so much extra value to the program! For a full meeting recap with pictures, be on the lookout for the Winter 2018 edition of Texas Asphalt

This chapter covers Asphalt Pavement Maintenance and Pavement Rehabilitation Methods, emphasizing long-term pavement repairs over short-term repairs as long-term repairs are more useful for mitigating further pavement damage. The chapter also provides definitions for Pavement Maintenance and Rehabilitation as a structure for the discussion to follow.
