Date: September 22, 2022, 2:00 pm EST

Speakers: Joseph Shacat, NAPA, and J. Richard Willis, NAPA
Description: In July 2022, NAPA published the first national assessment of GHG emissions associated with asphalt mixture production in the United States. This webinar takes a deep dive into the details of the emissions inventory report. We’ll start by exploring the methodology and the underlying datasets that were used to calculate GHG emissions, with a goal of understanding how changes in industry practices have affected GHG emissions during the period from 2009 to 2019. We’ll then explore the potential GHG emissions reductions that can be achieved through widespread implementation of readily available technologies and practices.

Date: Tuesday, October 4, 2022
Time: 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm EDT
Speakers: Cheng Ling, PE, PhD, Liquid Asphalt/HMA Technical Manager, Pike Industries Inc.; Steve Jackson, General Manager, West Contracting; and J. Richard Willis, PhD, Vice President, Engineering, Research, & Technology, NAPA
Description: Several of the previous webinars in NAPA’s Road to Zero series have discussed the GHG emissions reductions associated with readily available technologies and practices. Although substantial reductions can be achieved, it is clear that getting to net zero will require the development of new mix production technologies and low carbon materials, and widespread implementation of these practices, akin to no less than a “moon shot” for the asphalt pavement community. This webinar will explore the long-term research and implementation efforts that will be needed over the coming decades to achieve net zero GHG emissions across the asphalt pavement industry.
Health & Safety

September is Suicide Prevention Month and with construction Workers having the highest suicide rate of all industries, we wanted to highlight some resources available to you. We hope you will take the time to learn to recognize the signs and take action in your organization.

A recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) using warm mix asphalt (WMA) field demonstration was conducted in Wilson, North Carolina in June 2015 to compare using post-consumer RAS (PC RAS) and manufacturer waste RAS (MW RAS). Mixes were produced using both types of RAS in conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA) and WMA. The WMA technology used the chemical additive Evotherm 3G M1. The National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) documented the production and construction of the demonstration projects and evaluated both mixes using a range of state-of-the-art laboratory tests. Results of the comparison are detailed in this report.

Date: Thursday, September 22, 2022
Time: 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm EDT
Description: Is it time to repave? Pavement condition survey results provide the foundation for identifying and prioritizing suggested improvement types and the timing of them. TRB will host a webinar on Thursday, September 22, 2022 from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm EDT that will address all aspects of pavement condition data collection and provide practical suggestions for ensuring quality of data. If survey results are inaccurate, agencies could be under- or over-estimating their improvement needs and misjudging when treatments will be needed. Presenters will discuss cracking quality management, standards for improving rut measurements, and standards to improve transverse profile measurements. This webinar is sponsored by the TRB Standing Technical Committee on Pavement Management Systems.

Date: Tuesday, November 1, 2022
Time: 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm EDT
Speakers: Mike Skinner, PE, Director of Pavement Engineering, Colorado Asphalt Pavement Association
Description: Parking lot pavements have significant differences than traditional roadway pavements. Material types, mix design, and construction practices will be discussed to improve service life and reduce maintenance costs. Attendees will be equipped with best practices for designing asphalt parking lots.
