SCAPA News and Events
Join your fellow SCAPA members on Thursday, April 29 to connect with lawmakers and discuss important topics that affect the asphalt industry in South Carolina. Sunnie and John DeWorken are working with the General Assembly to put together an informative legislative program. Due to COVID-19 we will meet with our elected representatives virtually through Zoom. Registration will open next week!
SCAPA's Young Professionals Committee, better known as PAVE, met earlier this month, and the members learned a lot about themselves and interacting with others. The meeting included an in-depth workshop review of the DISC Assessment, which each member took before the meeting. They also had some healthy competition that encouraged members to work together in a fun, competitive atmosphere. Rebecca Battle-Bryant with Battle Plan Consulting provided the DISC Workshop and brought a lot of energy.
The SCAPA Board of Directors and Staff are optimistic that we will be able to get together in person for our Summer Conference. We are working with the venue in order to create a safe event that will meet occupancy guidelines and requirements. Please watch for more news on the 2021 SCAPA Summer Conference in the next month.

Most of the state highway agencies that currently use the ‘93/’98 AASHTO method for pavement structural design require a layer coefficient of 0.44 for asphalt mixtures, which was originally
recommended by the AASHTO Road Test in the 1950s. However, several existing studies have shown that adding aramid synthetic fibers (ASF) can potentially improve the structural capacity of asphalt mixtures due to fiber reinforcement. This improvement may lead to a higher structural coefficient and a reduced asphalt layer thickness, providing significant cost savings for pavement construction. Time: March 23, 2021 3:30 p.m. in ET Speaker: Danny Gierhart, PE, Asphalt Institute Description: This presentation will give a brief overview of PAVEXpress, a free, web-based flexural and rigid pavement design software. This webinar will focus on the asphalt pavement thickness design portion of PAVEXpress, which is based on the 1993 AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures. Learning Objectives: 1. How to access PAVEXpress and use it for pavement thickness design. 2. Learn to quickly evaluate various pavement design considerations. 3. Learn to evaluate the cost effectiveness of different designs which are structurally equivalent.
Digitally join us and Meg Soper on March 31 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. EDT as she discusses "Work-Life Balance? You’ve Got to be Kidding!" Meg’s presentation will celebrate the accomplishments of Women of Asphalt as they are called to adapt to the new normal while sharing her tips for bolstering resilience so we can be at our best – all delivered with her trademark humor. She will share ideas and best practices that she has adopted using her "Key Elements of Life" model to demonstrate how the choices we make about nutrition, exercise and sleep all play a vital role in helping us build our resilience and maintain a positive mindset. She will bring home the message of how important it is to take time for ourselves each day so that we find the energy and inspiration to perform to the best of our abilities, even as the lines between our personal and professional lives become blurrier.
