Blythe Construction, Inc. celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2021! Founded in January 1921, Blythe has maintained a strong presence throughout the Carolinas as one of the region’s leading roadway contractors. To celebrate the milestone, the company is reflecting back on key moments throughout its history and looking ahead to continued growth in the future.

Blythe Construction, Inc. completed its first project in the spring of 1921, paving Lawyers Road in the company’s hometown of Charlotte, NC. At the time, grading was performed with equipment drawn by teams of horses or mules. Although destined to be replaced by mechanized equipment still being developed at the time, the animals—and the workers who drove them, known within the industry as “Muleskinners”—occupy an essential place in Blythe Construction’s history.

In the years following the Great Depression, Blythe Construction saw gradual but consistent growth. That changed in the early 1940s when the company landed its largest contract yet: a $75 Million JV for development of Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina. The now 246-square-mile base camp was a tremendous undertaking, which helped launch Blythe Construction into the big leagues of general contractors.

Blythe Construction, Inc. was one of many contractors involved in construction of the Downtown Connector in Atlanta during the early 1950s. Although the project was outside Blythe’s normal area of business, the scope of work was well within the company’s wheelhouse. During that time, Blythe took on an increasing number of large-scale public interstate projects, the likes of which continue to form the core of Blythe’s business today.

Blythe Construction, Inc. continues to be a leading roadway contractor in the Carolinas, with major projects underway in Charlotte, Raleigh and Winston-Salem, NC and in Gaffney, SC. In addition to its construction operations, Blythe owns and operates 12 asphalt plants located throughout NC and SC. These facilities serve the company’s substantial paving operations and supplies quality hot-mix asphalt to dozens of valued customers.

Blythe is grateful to its business partners, customers and community members for their support the last 100 years and is looking forward to another century of serving the Carolinas.
