General Announcements

The method "Sieve analysis of pulpwood chips" is more commonly known as the Williams Chip Size Classification method.  It was developed by the Williams Apparatus Company as a way to measure the size distribution of pulp chips. The Williams method measures primarily length and width of chips using a series of round-hole trays. The size distribution relates to the uniformity of pulping.

TAPPI developed a Suggested  Method for the test in 1945.  It became an Official Standard in 1950.  It was reviewed and revised several times over more than 50 years.  Its last version was as Useful Method UM 21.  When the industry shifted its interest to chip thickness in pulping performance, new classifiers were developed that used parallel rods to measure thickness in combination with round holes.

Because of this industry shift, there has been little interest in the Williams method, and it was withdrawn from the TAPPI Useful Method set along with a number of others when new guidelines were adopted for the UMs in 2011. It cannot be reinstated until it is reviewed and revised in accordance with the current UM guidelines.

The Williams classifier is still used in the structural panel, biomass and the pulp chip export businesses.  Contracts for current chip export refer to the Williams method in the definition of chip specifications.  Since the method is still in active use by the industry, there is a need to reinstate the method so that it can be distributed and used as a valid contract document.

If you are interested in participating in a Working Group to review and revise the Williams Chip Classification Method so that it can be submitted for reinstatement, please contact standards@tappi.org by May 15, 2015.

A number of groups relevant to standards work will be meeting in Atlanta in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of TAPPI, being celebrated at the 2015 PaperCon Conference.  Information on the conference, including links to hotel information, can be found at http://www.papercon.org/.

The Fiberboard Shipping Container Testing Committee (Fiscotec) of the TAPPI Corrugated Packaging Division, will meet on Monday, April 20, at 11:00 am at the Georgia World Congress Center.

The committees of the TAPPI Process and Product Quality Division will meet on Tuesday, April 21, also at the Georgia World Congress Center, at these times:

Optical Properties Committee, 9:00-10:00 am

Pulp and Chemical Properties Committee, 10:00-11:00 am

Tissue Properties Subcommittee, 11:00 am-12 Noon

Physical Properties Committee, 1:30-3:00 pm

ISO Technical Committee 6 (Paper, board, and pulps) will begin their meetings with a reception Tuesday evening, followed by meetings of their working groups on Wednesday and Thursday, April 22-23. Plenary meetings for TC6/SC2 and TC 6 will take place, respectively, on Friday and Saturday, April 24-25. Delegates to these meetings are selected by the member body in their home country. These delegates have been issued an invitation to arrive early in Atlanta to participate in TAPPI technical committees and the TAPPI 100th anniversary celebration.

Although you do not have to register for the conference to attend TAPPI committee meetings, you are encouraged to do so. Contact TAPPI Member Connection at 1-800-332-8686 (US), 1-800-446-9431 (Canada), +1-770-446-1400 (Worldwide), +1-770-446-6947 (Fax), or email memberconnection@tappi.org. Be sure to tell them you want to register as a committee attendee only so there will be no registration fee, and a badge will be ready for you on site. You may also register as a committee attendee on site.

You may register online as well and purchase tickets for the social events by going to http://www.prereg.net/2015/pcon/. You will need to create a user name and password, then provide the information asked. IMPORTANT: when it takes you to the page where you fill in your Contact Information, you must select "Committee Meetings/Special Events ONLY" in the dropdown box to get to the page where you can register for committee meetings only. Any other selections will go to a page where you have to pay fees for sessions. After you pass the page asking if you have any special needs, you will come to a page where you can select special events that you want to attend and pay the fees for those.

If you want to register and pay the fee for the full conference in order to attend technical sessions, you may do that online as well or you can contact Member Connection as outlined above. Online, follow the instructions above, but when you get to the Contact Information Page, select PaperCon 2015 instead of committee meetings only.

Product & Product Quality Division committees are in need of new members to support the development and maintenance of standards we all use in the manufacture of the products we deliver to our customers.

These committees discuss and make decisions on critical issues that deal with standards which are currently being used by the pulp and paper industry, as well as those which are being developed for them.

Below are the committees which are in need of your support:

Pulp and Chemical Properties Committee

Optical Properties Committee

Physical Properties Committee

Tissue Properties Subcommittee

Joining one or more of these groups gives you and your company the opportunity to participate in the discussion and development of the standards we use for evaluating the product and product quality. Without good pulp and paper industry standards to guide us, we will not be able to deliver what our customers require.  Therefore, please consider volunteering your company and your support for these committees.

For all those members who are already involved in Standard Specific Interest Groups (SSIG), we ask you to make the next step in standard development and maintenance participation by joining a committee today.

Meetings are held twice a year to discuss ongoing committee work. The meetings can be attended in person or by phone conference. The next meetings are being held in Atlanta, GA, April 20-21, 2015 during PaperCon 2015.

Please contact Steve Berg, P&PQ Division Chairman (sberg@thwingalbert.com) or Charles Bohanan, Director of Standards and Awards (standards@tappi.org) for more information.

Plans are already underway for the 100th Anniversary of TAPPI, which will be observed during the 2015 PaperCon Conference in Atlanta, April 19-22.2015.

The TAPPI Centennial Celebration Gala promises to be an exciting evening celebrating TAPPI's past, present, and future. Mark your calendars and plan to attend this once-in-a-career evening on Monday, April 20, at the AmericasMart in Atlanta. This evening of cocktails and dinner, seeing old friends, making new acquaintances, and celebrating the incredible progress and future potential of our industry can't be missed.

As part of the celebration, TAPPI and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have invited ISO Technical Committee TC 6 and its subcommittees and working groups to hold its 2015 meeting during the PaperCon week.

TAPPI's Centennial Celebration includes a keep-sake book, to be published in April 2015. It spotlights TAPPI's rich history, the people, the organization, and the impact that members and innovations have made on the industry. Get a preview of these innovations, more information, insights, little-known-facts and history on the Centennial website. On this site you can also sign up for the special newsletter for this event.

Getting started is easy. Do you have just a general idea for a standard, or are you farther along and have a substantial draft? If you just have a general idea for a standard or TIP, complete the New Idea Submission Form. TAPPI will review your idea and identify an appropriate committee or group to work on your suggestion. If you are further along, send an initial draft to standards@tappi.org. From there, the TAPPI Standards Manager will guide you through the appropriate process to finalize and approve the new document.

Standards Coming Up For Review

The system for review and development of TAPPI Standards requires an announcement of review dates so that any interested TAPPI parties may access the drafts, submit comments, and/or join the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) to cast an official vote.

Listed below are the Standards that will be up for review in 2015. The date indicated is the target date on which the draft will be distributed to the Standard-Specific Interest Group (SSIG) for that particular Standard.

Any interested individuals who wish to be part of the voting for any Standard should send a message to standards@tappi.org and request voting membership on the corresponding SSIG, prior to the target ballot date, if possible. Anyone who joins the SSIG before the target balloting date will receive a notice of the ballot.

If you have joined the Standard Specific Interest Group for any Standard, you will receive a notice for ballot at the proper time with instructions for casting your vote and making your comments. If you wish to join the Standard Specific Interest Group for a particular Standard, please go to the Subject Categories for Standards  page or contact the Standards Department at TAPPI (standards@tappi.org), or phone +1-770-209-7276 or fax +1-770-446-6947).
