Yahoo Finance names optometry as a profession that offers a low-stress work life while also offering a median salary of at least $100,000.
 
ASCO’s 2022-2023 Annual Student Data Report, released in May 2023, shows an increased percentage of underrepresented minority full-time students as compared to last year. The percentage of Black or African American students increased from 4.0% to 4.3% and the percentage of Hispanic or Latino students increased from 7.8% to 8.7%. Numbers are based on the 23 U.S. optometry schools with enrolled students in fall 2022. Five years ago, the percentage of Black or African American students was 2.7% and the percentage of Hispanic or Latino students was 6.4%.

Students from Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Optometry (CCO) focused on their future at an inaugural Career Fair on the Downers Grove Campus. More than 20 different future employers and sponsors traveled to campus to speak with CCO students.
 
Janene Sims, OD, PhD, and Andrew Rothstein, OD, will be inducted into the Center for the Study of Community Health as Center Scholars. Induction into this organization is based on the effort potential members make to reduce health risks in underserved communities.
 
The book “Primary Care of the Anterior Segment” by Louis Catania, OD ‘69, FAAO, DSc, has become an iconic textbook in eye care over many years. And now it’s been updated with a third eponym edition.
 
Southern College of Optometry formally awarded 134 graduates with their Doctor of Optometry degrees at a commencement ceremony held on May 2, 2023 in downtown Memphis.
 
David Friess, OD ‘02, FAAO, has been given the Public Service Award from Salus University’s Alumni Association.
 
Congratulations to second-year optometry student, Jessica Wang, for winning the Student Innovator Award – a $5,000 scholarship that rewards the most creative, innovative, and feasible idea proposed by a student, or a team of up to three students. Jessica’s presentation, “Pectin-Chitosan Bioplastics: A better way to visualize contact lens packaging,” focused on the use of biodegradable materials that are abundantly available and a renewable resource; pectin from citrus peel and chitosan from prawn shells.
 
The Arizona College of Optometry (AZCOPT) continues to shine as a leader in eyecare. At the Midwestern University Eye Institute on the Glendale, AZ, campus, clinical faculty are now offering some of the newest technology in cataract surgery: Light Adjustable Lenses (LAL) implanted at the time of the cataract surgery. This cutting-edge procedure is performed by Robert Fintelmann, MD, FACS, Associate Professor, Arizona College of Optometry.
 
Marshall B. Ketchum University (MBKU), an independent, private, non-profit, accredited educational institution in Fullerton, California, formally introduced Julie A. Schornack, OD, MEd as its next president to lead the university following a highly attended inauguration event Friday, April 28, 2023.

The Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions (FASHP) has declared the low number of historically underrepresented men of color (HUMOC) graduating and entering the health care professions a national crisis.
 
Registration is open for Optometry’s Meeting®, taking place June 21-24 under the banner “Voicing Your Vision” in downtown Washington, D.C., at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
 
To promote diversity and equity in the optometric profession for generations to come, the American Optometric Association (AOA) and the American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) have created the AOA/AOSA Opportunities in Optometry Grant program. This fund is designed as a one-time stipend for under-represented minority students interested in the field of optometry to help defray the costs associated with applying to optometry school.
 
The deadline has been extended to June 30, 2023.
 
On July 12-13, 2023, Prevent Blindness will host the 12th annual Focus on Eye Health Summit as a FREE virtual interactive event.
