Message from the Chair

Dear members,

We are excited to announce NYSAE’s premier event—Meet New York 2021, our one-of-a-kind mini trade show is back live and in person on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021 at the Marriot Marquis in NYC! For those of you who have attended before, you know that this much-loved event brings together association and not-for-profit leaders, convention, corporate and meeting planners, and their hospitality partners for an afternoon of education, networking, and cocktails topped off with tickets to a Broadway show. For those of you who have never attended, this is a perfect way to reenter NYC this fall. The event is free!

We asked our members three important questions as leaders of associations. Today we feature Kimberly Unger, CEO and Executive Director, STANY‎.

 1. What are the three values that are most important to you as a leader (of an association)—that is, the consistent behaviors that everyone can rely on from you?
Meet NY Spotlight
September starts the countdown for Meet NY 2021. This year’s education panel is bringing together key industry leaders to discuss how the meetings industry will rebound in the months ahead. Panelists will share their experiences and how their meetings are adjusting moving forward.

For Membership and Mission-Based Organizations

It is easier to keep a member than get a new one. It can cost five times more to attract a ‎new customer, than it does to retain an existing one. Increasing customer retention ‎rates by 5% increases profits by 25% to 95%, according to research done by Frederick ‎Reichheld of Bain & Company.

An esteemed panel of industry executives will share their professional experiences, ‎insights, including how they envision the future of membership.‎

Synergy Awards

The 2021 Synergy Awards is your chance to celebrate the successes of the association community over the past year. We have an incredible slate of honorees ranging from Joe Benincasa, President & CEO of the Actors Fund, to Melva Miller, CEO of ABNY, to NYC & Company and the New York State Restaurant Association.

The event will be an in-person breakfast held at the fabulous Current at Chelsea Piers from 9-10:30 a.m. Registration will open an hour early to ensure that there will be an appropriate amount of time for networking and catching up with colleagues.

Want to extend your support past in-person attendance? Sponsorship opportunities include award presenters, table, and half tables. For more information contact Alan Goodin at AGoodin@kellencompany.com.

Ask the Expert

Q: Should attendees be required to wear masks and proof of vaccination for events?

It certainly is your prerogative to require masks and proof of vaccination. Since not all of the population is vaccinated yet, you will get a natural drop off with those who were planning to attend but not with this requirement. We have found if we want all the attendees to arrive who were planning to, we have to also provide free vaccinations on site. Of course, those newly vaccinated are treated as unvaccinated as the benefit of the vaccine has not gone into effect yet, so it really is just a way to drive attendance and put others attending at ease that vaccinations are not just required but also provided.
