Message from the Board

Dear Members,

As we get closer to two of NYSAE’s most prestigious events, Meet NY 2020 and the Synergy Awards Luncheon, I already feel the enthusiasm from our membership and I am beaming with excitement! During a year of transition, the dedicated volunteers from both the Meet NY and the Synergy Awards Committees have been hard at work for months, innovating and carefully reengineering their events to improve engagement, deliver stellar programming and bring significant benefit to the association executives and hospitality partners communities. What’s new? Here is just a sneak peek.
Member Spotlight

I have been a member of NYSAE when for the last 3 years living in the NY area. Before my time in DC, I was a member for ten years or more. I joined to network with peers and to stay connected with association executives while learning what challenges and opportunities they are having. In my last job before Visit Salt Lake, I worked for a while in the association world. Having a strong relationship with the C- suite on down in any association is the best way to build client trust and relationship. NYSAE is the best way to build those relationships, including peer relationships that are invaluable to be successful.
Synergy Awards

This year's Chief Executive of the Year award honoree is Joi Gordon, CEO, Dress for Success. Joi Gordon initially served as a board member for Dress for Success before being named CEO in 2002. Outside of Dress for Success, Gordon is an executive board member and Vice President of Greater Queens Chapter of Links, Inc., a member of the Women's Forum of New York and serves as an advisor to the G100 Women's Leadership Council.

Joi Gordon will be honored at the 2020 Synergy Awards Luncheon and Annual Meeting on May 13 at the Harvard Club New York City. Contact Holly Koenig at HKoenig@kellencompany.com on how you can get involved with the Synergy Awards.

Q. I’m confused about membership dues deductions when the organization is a 501(c)3. I believe that even with a (c)3 organization, membership dues are still deductible as a business expense. Does that option mean that dues can never be deducted as a tax-deductible charitable donation when the membership organization is a 501 (c)3? Depending on their tax situations, some members might prefer to have their dues be a charitable donation rather than a business expense.

With complex rules governing the nonprofit sector, many nonprofits may incorporate advocacy into key parts of their work, but may need clarity regarding the scope of permissible activities according to the law. This event will cover:
• differences between lobbying and advocacy, and what an association or nonprofit can do on behalf of its members
• the legal aspects of lobbying versus advocacy, with a particular focus on 501 (c)(3) and 501 (c)(6) organizations
• what is often on an advocacy "wish list" and how that aligns with organizational implementation.
