NRMCA, through its Build With Strength and Pave Ahead initiatives, is seeking nominations for the 2024 Concrete Innovations Awards. The award program recognizes outstanding achievement in concrete design and construction. Innovative projects are awarded for outstanding performance while lowering environmental impacts, including embodied and operational carbon footprint. Buildings and infrastructure projects substantially designed and built using concrete in the United States in the last five years are eligible. Projects must demonstrate improved performance and sustainability. An NRMCA member company must have been involved in supplying products or services to the project. Areas of excellence include advanced quality control, innovative cements, supplementary cementitious materials, admixtures, aggregates, recycling methods, carbon capture and sequestration technologies, measurement tools or innovative designs that improve performance and sustainability. NRMCA presented on The Concrete Industry’s Views on Sustainability to attendees at the 35th Annual American Segmental Bridge Institute (ASBI) Convention held on November 7 in Tucson, AZ. The presentation, delivered by Shamim Rashid-Sumar, NRMCA senior vice president, codes and standards, focused on industry transparency and the development of environmental product declarations (EPDs); how public entities can consider sustainability during the procurement process and how the concrete industry is reducing its environmental impact. ASBI and NRMCA are both members of the National Concrete Bridge Council (NCBC), a council of allied industry organizations dedicated to quality concrete bridge construction. NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovation, Frank Mruk had the honor of representing the United States at the American Institute of Architects International Conference held earlier this month in Mexico City. Speakers included Javier Sordo Madaleno, HKS; Gensler, Page, KPF; Jim Olson and Tom Kundig (Olson Kundig Architects); Arturo & Jorge Arditti (Arditti + RDT Arquitectos); Fernanda Canales (Fernanda Canales Arquitectura); Marcio Kogan (Studio MK27); Víctor Legorreta (LEGORRETA); Ismael Leyva (Ismael Leyva Architects); Francisco Martin Del Campo (Grupo Arquitectoma); Enrique Norten (TEN Arquitectos); Benjamin Romano (LBR&A); Jacob van Rijs (MVRDV) and Luis Vidal (luis vidal + arquitectos). The theme of the conference was Memory and Visions; it took place at Universidad Anáhuac and numerous other sites throughout the city. Over 200 architects and 100 students attended the event. NRMCA's Ready Mixed Concrete Delivery Professional Driver of the Year Award, now in its 28th year and sponsored by the Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau (TMMB), acknowledges the significant contribution of ready mixed concrete truck drivers to the growth and success of individual companies and the ready mixed concrete industry. As a salute to these key members of the concrete production and delivery team, the award recognizes the driver’s career achievement, safety, professionalism, competence and customer service skills in a manner that will enhance the industry and public image of the career of Ready Mixed Concrete Delivery Professional. Last week, NRMCA partnered with the Wyoming Technology Transfer Center and the Colorado/Wyoming Chapter of the American Concrete Pavement Association to bring Best Practices for Constructing and Maintaining Durable Concrete to Lander and Casper, Wyoming. Sarah Dalton, PE, pavement engineer for the chapter and NRMCA Vice President, Local Paving, Don Clem (shown here, standing beside screen), presented the latest innovations in concrete design and construction of concrete pavements, including an overview of proper construction techniques for concrete flatwork, rehabilitation techniques, concrete overlays, NRMCA's Design Assistance Program and ACPA CO/WY resources. The programs were attended by about 20 professionals from WYDOT, local agencies, several engineering firms, a cement company and general contractor. The next NRMCA Concrete Durability Course will be offered online from December 11 - 18. There will be 10 sessions offered in two, 2-hour sessions each day from December 11 - 15. The Level IV certification exam will be administered online on December 18. Course content will be available on the NRMCA training site for attendees to download. Sessions will be recorded for later access by attendees.
