The 2023 International Code Council Conference and Expo took place in St. Louis from June 23 - 28; NRMCA's Dr. Julian Mills-Beale and Tiffany Reed-Villarreal attended to explore smart strategies and strengthen relationships with industry players who are shaping the future of building safety. They participated in the ICC Center of Focus meetings, the Annual Business Meeting, Insight and Education Sessions, and Membership Council meetings. These events enabled NRMCA to further advocate for concrete industry’s interests concerning best practices for sustainable, resilient and energy-efficient building code enforcement. Ready mixed concrete truck driver Jason Erickson from NRMCA Producer member Smokey Point Concrete, a division of CalPortland of Arlington, WA, earned top honors at NRMCA's National Mixer Driver Championship held earlier this month at the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, TN, in conjunction with NRMCA’s ConcreteWorks 2023. Mr. Erickson (seen here) also earned the champion’s check of $5,000. He has been driving for Smokey Point Concrete since 2019 and was the 5th place finisher in the 2022 NRMCA National Mixer Driver Championship held in Denver.
The Alliance for Concrete Codes and Standards (ACCS) organized a two-day workshop to develop its codes and standards advocacy agenda for the International Code Council’s next code development cycle. The workshop was hosted by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) at its Resource Center in Elk Grove, IL, and was chaired by NRMCA Senior Vice President, Codes and Standards, Shamim Rashid-Sumar, who currently serves as ACCS president.
Last week, NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk presented the winners of the 2023 AIA Central Massachusetts Design Awards held at Architect Diller Scofidio + Renfro's - College of the Holy Cross PRIOR Performing Arts Center in Worcester. The Arts Center, opened in late 2022, was designed as an incubator for multidisciplinary creativity and is known for its innovative precast concrete curtain walls which line the auditorium’s interior.

NRMCA's Ready Mixed Concrete Delivery Professional Driver of the Year Award, now in its 28th year and sponsored by the Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau (TMMB), acknowledges the significant contribution of ready mixed concrete truck drivers to the growth and success of individual companies and the ready mixed concrete industry. As a salute to these key members of the concrete production and delivery team, the award recognizes the driver’s career achievement, safety, professionalism, competence and customer service skills in a manner that will enhance the industry and public image of the career of the Ready Mixed Concrete Delivery Professional. The 2024 award winner will be honored at NRMCA’s Annual Convention in Tampa, FL, in March 2024. Nominations must be e-mailed to DOY@nrmca.org by December 31. The Carolinas Ready Mixed Concrete Association (CRMCA) and NRMCA staff teamed up last week to host a webinar titled Design Assistance: Process, Projects & Perspectives. CRMCA's Jessica Wilson organized the webinar and provided an overview of the design assistance process; NRMCA's Frank Gordon and Don Clem provided an overview of the NRMCA design assistance centers and NRMCA members Gordon Singletary of S&W Ready Mix Concrete and Drew Turner of Concrete Supply Company shared examples of how they successfully converted projects partnering with CRMCA and NRMCA.
