The Alliance for Concrete Codes and Standards (ACCS) organized a two-day workshop to develop its codes and standards advocacy agenda for the International Code Council’s next code development cycle. The workshop was hosted by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) at its Resource Center in Elk Grove, IL, and was chaired by NRMCA Senior Vice President, Codes and Standards, Shamim Rashid-Sumar, who currently serves as ACCS president.

ACCS’s mission is to identify and pursue provisions to codes and standards as well as reference standards that improve life safety, property protection and welfare of the general public at the national, state and local levels through the use of concrete-based systems. Several concrete industry organizations participated in the workshop, including ACI; Concrete Foundations Association, Expanded Shale, Clay and Slate Institute, Insulated Concrete Forms Manufacturers Association, Neu, Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI), Portland Cement Association (PCA) and the Tilt-Up Concrete Association; NRMCA Codes and Standards team members Dr. Julian Mills-Beale, Tiffany Read-Villarreal and Darryl Dixon also participated.

During the workshop, the group reviewed various codes and standards issues for the upcoming ICC 2024-2026 code development cycle, including but not limited to embodied carbon limits, thermal bridging requirements, exterior wall flame propagation compliance testing, fire resistance requirements and performance-based design. The group also briefly reviewed Alliance member advocacy activities for ACI, ASCE, ASHRAE, ASTM, NFPA and NRMCA reference standards as well as state and local advocacy efforts.
