On September 11, NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, and American Institute of Architects (AIA) Rhode Island Chapter President Frank Mruk hosted the sold out AIA RI/AIA Architecture Forum Golf Classic at the Agawam Hunt Club in Rumford, RI. (Shown here are, left to right, Ryan Haggerty of Vision 3 Architects, Mruk, Roni Phipps, executive director, AIA RI and and Paul Hauser, also of Vision 3 Architects). The AIA Rhode Island Architectural Forum is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that was established by AIA Rhode Island to support educational programs within the architectural community. The forum’s primary vehicle for supporting architectural education is the scholarship program; multiple scholarships are awarded to qualified financial aid eligible students studying architecture.
The Illinois Ready Mixed Concrete Association recently hired Mike Rickerson to bolster marketing and promotion efforts with a primary focus on pavements. Rickerson will be supported by Luke McHugh, NRMCA senior director, local paving. Last week, McHugh and Rickerson embarked on a northern Illinois tour visiting with several engineers, contractors, developers and owners who have benefited from past IRMCA and NRMCA assistance. Both associations hope to re-energize a historically fruitful promotion partnership that made Illinois a leader in converting pavements to concrete. For more information, contact Luke McHugh at lmchugh@nrmca.org.
NRMCA, the Insulating Concrete Forms Manufacturers Association (ICFMA), ICF manufacturer Superform and Ohio Concrete partnered with Columbus, OH, city schools to offer insulating concrete form (ICF) education and training (shown here) to over 60 vocational students last week in Central Ohio, reports NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Donn Thompson. The two-day event featured a new streamlined version of ICF construction training. The instruction offers specialized vocational credits for the students, recently recognized by the Ohio Department of Education as an Industry Recognized Credential (IRC) beginning with the 2023 school year. Attendees earned six of the 12 IRCs required for graduation under the state’s program. “Interest in the credentialed ICF training from other Ohio school districts has led to ongoing discussions among all participating organizations to look at additional student events in other locations in the state,” said Thompson's colleague, Project Manager, Concrete Promotion, Derek Torres. Columbus school officials are applying for grant funding to expand the program as part of ongoing industry recruitment efforts. The program can potentially serve as a model for similar vocational training for future ICF installers in other locations in the U.S. Local construction arts instructors were provided with the nearby location of a new ICF hotel project where students will be able to tour an actual multistory concrete commercial project. For more information on the ICFMA installers training, contact Derek Torres at dtorres@nrmca.org. Donn Thompson, dthompson@nrmca.org, can provide more information on additional Build With Strength activities throughout the Midwest.

City officials in Overland Park, KS, recently voted to require new residential developments to be constructed with concrete pavement, for residential and collector streets, reports NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Ken Justice. Members of the City Council made the unanimous decision after years of discussion, ultimately choosing concrete because of durability and reduced maintenance costs along with public complaints on the cost of frequent repairs of many of the city's asphalt streets.

The NRMCA Regional Concrete Technologist Training and Certification Program (Short Course) is scheduled to be held February 5-9, 2024, at the Dolese Support Services Center in Oklahoma City. Interested persons are encouraged to register early as the number of available slots is limited. The Technical Short Course provides a fundamental understanding of concrete, aggregates and concrete-making materials; requirements in industry codes and standards and proportioning concrete mixtures. Attendees can obtain industry-recognized NRMCA certifications: NRMCA Concrete Technologist Level 2 and 3 certification. The Short Course is intended for quality, sales and other personnel with a technical role with ready mixed concrete companies and suppliers to the industry. New hires in these roles can also benefit from attending. A significant amount of technical content is covered that requires the attendees to have a basic concrete technology background and at least a high-school level of math. Registrants will be provided with pre-course study content to prepare about three weeks before the course. Click here for more information and to register. Contact Jeffrey Bowers for assistance with registration or Colin Lobo on further course details. |
