Concrete Delivery Professional Garrett Wilkerson of Maschmeyer Concrete in Hudson, FL, earned the top honors at this year’s National Mixer Driver Championship held earlier this month in Orlando, FL. The event was held at the Gaylord Palms Resort in conjunction with NRMCA’s ConcreteWorks 2025. Mr. Wilkerson took home the “Mullings Cup” and the champion’s check of $6,000. Mr. Wilkerson (seen here) has been driving concrete mixers for 11 years and is a two-time, top three finisher in the Florida Concrete & Products Association (FC&PA) rodeo.

The MIT CSHub will hold a webinar titled Structural Analysis at Scale; A Computational Inquiry into Complex Floor Systems on Monday, October 27, at 11 a.m. Eastern time.

With the growing acuteness of the climate crisis, it has become increasingly important to develop realistic carbon-conscious construction and architectural design strategies. One high-impact area to focus on is the material efficiency of flexural systems, particularly floors. Floors are among the most materials-intensive structural components in buildings and while decades of research have explored optimal floor system design, the complexity of proposed solutions has limited their practical implementation. This talk will discuss a comprehensive computational pipeline that narrows the gap between the theoretically optimal and the practically buildable for flat-slab floor systems supported by Nervi-like ribs.

NRMCA Vice President, Building Innovations, Michael Wymant recently presented at the High-Performance Construction with Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) conference held at Polar Park in Worcester, MA, on the crucial topic of the decarbonization of concrete. After thanking hosts Tremco CPG Inc. and the Northern New England Concrete Association he noted that seeing so many architects, engineers and contractors engaged in finding solutions for more sustainable building was truly inspiring.

The conference was packed with crucial information on building performance, specifically the benefits of Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF). Presentations underscored the importance of building resiliency, school design using ICFs and the immense energy efficiency that these systems offer. The event featured a stellar lineup of speakers, including Joseph Lstiburek of Building Science Corporation, Ben Kleine-Kracht, PE, Emily Gill, PE, Emily Bartos of CMTA, Inc., Kristian Whitsett, Molly Clark and Nayef Mudawar of Jones Whitsett Architects, Andy Horgan of Nudura Insulated Concrete Forms, and Greg Diamond of Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance.

The Boston Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) recently honored NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk with its prestigious Veteran Award during the Evolution of Spec Writing II event held at the UMass Club in Boston. Mruk currently serves on the CSI Boston Board as a director and on the CSI Northeast Region Board as president.

The program featured a distinguished panel, including Mark Kalin (Kalin Associates), Armaan Shah (Ace Lab), David Stutzman (Conspectus), Gary Christensen (RIB) and Kristen Norwood (SMMA). The discussion explored how emerging technologies are reshaping material selection and specification practices across the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. Mruk facilitated a segment on artificial intelligence, examining how AI is transforming its way across product data, performance metrics, and sustainability criteria inform design and construction decisions.

“These firms represent the front line of innovation and influence in the AEC industry,” said Mruk. “They’re redefining how we think about materials, data and specification tools that shape the next generation of building practice.”

NRMCA continues to promote the benefits of innovative concrete construction solutions. For more information, contact Frank Mruk at fmruk@nrmca.org.

This week, NRMCA participated in the 2025 International Code Council (ICC) Annual Conference and Expo held in Cleveland. Senior Director, Energy Codes and Standards, Darryl Dixon and Director, Codes and Standards, Dr. Julian Mills-Beale (seen here with attendees) discussed resilience and energy efficiency in the built environment with conference attendees, highlighting NRMCA’s status and offerings as an ICC Preferred Education Provider.

NRMCA’s booth also included information on NRMCA’s completed study for ICF testing for NFPA 285, Concrete Design Center, 2024 Survey of Insurance Costs and the Carbon Calculator tool.

The ICC Annual Conference and Expo brings together building and fire code officials, architects, engineers, designers and code experts for education and committee meetings. Following the expo and conference, Mills-Beale and Dixon will be joined by Shamim Rashid-Sumar, senior vice president, codes and standards, to participate in the second round of committee meetings.

For more information on NRMCA’s codes and standards advocacy activities, contact Shamim Rashid-Sumar at ssumar@nrmca.org.
