Emergency call takers have a new opportunity for education and professional development as the Friends of 9-1-1 initiative announces the availability of Telecommunicator Continuing Education Scholarships. Applications for the program are being accepted through April 30 and are open to any 9-1-1 call taker with at least one year of experience and in good standing with his or her employer.

"Being a 9-1-1 call taker is a rewarding but pressure-packed job," explained Brian Fontes, CEO of NENA. "It requires a variety of skills gained through training and experience. These professionals often work long shifts, handling dozens of calls, and often not knowing how or if the various emergencies are resolved. Being responsive to those in need, harnessing new technologies, and managing the stress of the job drives a need for expanded training, professional development, and wellness programs for call takers in nearly every community."

The scholarships are the first to be made available through Friends of 9-1-1. Each Telecommunicator Continuing Education Scholarship recipient will receive:
  • Complimentary registration to the NENA 2014 Conference & Expo, a savings of $829;
  • Complimentary registration for a one-day, pre-conference course of choice at NENA 2014, an additional savings of $275; and
  • A $500 travel stipend.
Interested applicants can click here to learn more and to apply online. To show your support for the 9-1-1 community and become a Friend of 9-1-1, visit here.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
This special feature highlights individual NENA Members from various backgrounds, industry segments, experience, and geographic locations. It offers members an opportunity to share their story with their colleagues and the greater NENA community.Click here to email NENA Member Services Director Bri Robinson if we should feature you or someone you know.

NENA: Why did you choose a career in public safety?

Michael Ball: After working as an EMT and Paramedic, I transitioned to the IT side of 9-1-1 because of my background with telecommunications and networks. Public Safety is simple in a few aspects and complex in most others. It never seems to hand you the same thing every day, and I believe that’s what I love about my career.

NENA: What do you like best about your job?

MB: The people that I work with and the team I have make my job one of the best around. It doesn’t matter what the issues are or what the project entails, we seem to be very successful at what we do, and that is what makes the long hours worth it.

OPS UPDATE
The NENA NG9-1-1 Education and Training working group has prepared a few talking points related to text-to-9-1-1 in order to ensure that the 9-1-1 community provides a consistent message nationwide. If contacted by the media related to text-to-9-1-1, below are talking points that may be used. These messages can be incorporated into a news release or educational materials.

Click here to visit the text-to-9-1-1 resources page, where you will find the Media Tips document, along with other valuable text-to-9-1-1 documents, including the Information and Planning Guide, training documents, and more.

In preparing for NG9-1-1 technology, as well as planning for routine replacement of PSAP premise equipment that is reaching the end of its service life, 9-1-1 administrators need to develop well-written Request for Proposals (RFPs) that clearly define requirements and expectations for any proposed systems. However, the process of defining minimum baseline functionality, desired features, and expected deliverables in order to ensure a successful system implementation can be quite frustrating for the PSAP administrator as well as the responding prospective vendors. The anticipated product of this workgroup will be an informational document for PSAP administrators that will assist them with the essential elements and best practices of RFP documents as well as a sample boiler plate template to help successfully identify and document requirements for procurement of PSAP equipment.  Members of both the PSAP and vendor community are encouraged to participate in this workgroup. If you would like to volunteer for this NENA Work Group, please complete the Join this Work Group form associated with the Request for Proposal (RFP) Work Group. Any specific questions may be directed to Lisa Dodson.

Project Need:
PSAPs may receive emergency calls from railroad call centers, railroad-sworn personnel, or similar parties related to railroad incidents. PSAPs must interact with railroad call centers when the PSAP becomes aware of an incident requiring emergency assistance involving a railroad.

Stakeholders:
Public Safety Authorities, PSAPs, Railroad Call Center management and personnel, Federal Railroad Administration, Railroad field responders, Emergency First Responders

Scope:
It is of benefit to both railroad and PSAP personnel to have standardized national recommendations and procedures, ensuring a quick and accurate information exchange. The NENA railroad and PSAP working group (WG) will provide information and guidance for updating of NENA 56-507 Railroad Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) Interaction document. The WG shall provide updated information and guidance for operational interaction between PSAPs, railroad call centers, railroad-sworn personnel in the field and related railroad responders.

Interested parties should send an email to DSC-leadership@dev.nena.org.

Having adjudicated all comments, the subject document is now considered "stable." Per NENA IPR, Section 4.2.2 a "Stable Form Notice" is being issued and is shown at the bottom of this email.

UPCOMING EVENTS
From reporting on the Afghanistan and Iraq wars to covering the on-going situation in the Middle East/North Africa, to observing the North Korean celebration of the 65th Anniversary of the Workers Party, to witnessing the final troops leaving Iraq from Camp Virginia in Kuwait and visiting the very border spot where he entered Iraq on March 20, 2003, embedded with the Marines, Woodruff conveys the most influential stories facing our world today.

In January of 2006, while reporting on U.S. and Iraqi security forces, Woodruff was seriously injured by a roadside bomb that struck his vehicle near Taji, Iraq. In an instant, his life was altered forever. Sharing stories from his moving and inspirational best-selling memoir, In An Instant, which he co-authored with his wife, Lee, Woodruff captivates audiences and leaves them with a new understanding of the fragility of life, the strength of family, the bravery of those who helped save his life, and lessons on how to survive and overcome even the most tragic of circumstances.

For his intrepid ability to get at the heart of a story, Woodruff has won numerous awards including three Emmys, a George Foster Peabody, an Alfred I. Dupont Award, and the Daniel Pearl Award for Courage and Integrity in Journalism. After his miraculous recovery, the Woodruffs established the Bob Woodruff Foundation (ReMIND.org), which assists wounded servicemen and their families with receiving the long-term care they need and helps them successfully reintegrate into their communities.
