NENA NEWS
Presented by Mobile Future with association partners NENA and USTelecom
Wednesday, April 4, 2012 @ 1 p.m. Eastern

This free webinar, based on a recently released Mobile Future report authored by former White House Advisor Jim Kohlenberger, examines how the next wave of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and other connected devices will further accelerate mobile opportunity and exacerbate the looming spectrum crunch. Wireless technologies play a significant role in the connection of an amazing array of devices (and people) to the Internet. Innovation and investment in M2M will transform vital sectors of the economy, including transportation, energy, health care and security to name a few.

The webinar looks at:
  • The promising and extensive opportunities in the digital device decade
  • The technologies that are driving the connected device revolution
  • The policy choices for enabling a brighter future beginning with making more spectrum available
  • The five key steps for harnessing connected devices for societal gains

Visit the NENA 9-1-1 Education Month webpage for resources that you can use to plan public education events and activities during April, promote the formal recognition of 9-1-1 Education Month in your area, deliver key educational messages to the public, and include in media outreach efforts.

Some of the items you will find on the NENA 9-1-1 Education Month webpage include:
  • The Making 9-1-1 Work for You! E-Brochure, featuring essential, age-appropriate, targeted information about the 9-1-1 system and emergency response in downloadable PDFs that you can reproduce and distribute to the general public, children, teens, and parents
  • Video and audio Public Service Announcements that may be reused with permission
  • Press release templates promoting 9-1-1 education, local events, and National 9-1-1 Education Month
  • Links to other public education websites featuring additional tools, resources, and information
Also, take a moment to visit www.know911.org for additional 9-1-1 education materials. This website, a main component of the National 9-1-1 Education Coalition's 9-1-1: The Number to Know campaign, is designed to bolster 9-1-1 education efforts across the nation and provide valuable resources to individuals, agencies, companies, and communities about the importance of 9-1-1 and its proper use. The website contains many free resources to promote and support local, regional, and state 9-1-1 education, awareness, and outreach efforts.

Have info you would like to share? 9-1-1 public education is a collaborate effort, and NENA welcomes your input and contributions. If you would like to make your educational resources available to other 9-1-1 professionals, or would like your local 9-1-1 Education Month / Public Safety Telecommunications Week events and activities listed on nena.org, contact Chris Nussman.

In short, Quality Assurance (QA) is the pathway for our telecommunicators to excel at what they do best – answering the calls! But what exactly is QA? How does it work? Is it easy to develop and implement a QA program? What can it do to improve PSAP call taking? These questions and more will be covered in this one-hour webinar and thirty-minute question and answer session, designed for anyone who works in a PSAP environment and is interested in establishing best practices to improve overall PSAP performance. Attendees will learn a brief history of QA, examine how it fits in with what we are doing in our 9-1-1 centers, and, ultimately, learn how QA improves the level of service provided to the public every day.

In past years during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, NENA featured an interview with a different 9-1-1 professional each weekday, highlighting his or her experiences in emergency communications. We would like to continue this popular feature this year during NPSTW (April 8-14). If you or someone you know would like to be profiled for NPSTW 2012, contact Chris Nussman for more information.

This free webinar explains how the FCC measures the performance of the wireless location technologies currently used to locate 9-1-1 phone calls made from cell phones. The webinar delves into the latest announcements from the FCC, including statements about county-wide averaging, a single location accuracy requirement, as well as an indoor location requirement. Also, analysts from Ovum review the results of a recent report that exposes the limitations of particular location techniques and shows the benefits of others.

Is your 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center ready to respond to a missing, abducted, or sexually exploited child call? There is a national standard for 9-1-1 best practices for these calls, established in collaboration between the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, NENA, NAED, APCO, and Amber Alert. Through this program, thousands of public safety professionals have attended online and classroom training. More than 60 agencies have adopted best practices for calls pertaining to missing, abducted, and sexually exploited children in their polices and training protocols. Free training and resources are available to your agency so that you will be prepared for this type of call.

If you have not participated in any of the free training made available, we would like to hear from you through this very short survey. Email 911@ncmec.org with questions.

UPCOMING EVENTS

You may recognize J.R. Martinez as the winner of season 13 of ABC's Dancing with the Stars or from his recurring role on the recently cancelled ABC soap opera All My Children. But Martinez's rise to fame came at a great physical and emotional cost. In April of 2003 while serving as a U.S. Army infantryman in Iraq, a Humvee he was driving was hit by an IED. Martinez was trapped inside the burning vehicle and suffered smoke inhalation as well as burns to more than 40 percent of his body. Martinez spent a total of 34 months in recovery and underwent 33 different procedures, including skin grafts and cosmetic surgery.

During his time in recovery, a nurse asked Martinez to speak with another burn patient who had just seen his injuries for the first time and had become withdrawn. The 45-minute visit was transformative for both men, ending with the patient beginning the healing process and Martinez finding a new calling in life. He began using his personal journey to help others, visiting with many patients in the hospital - sharing his story and listening to theirs.

Join NENA on June 11 in Long Beach, CA, to hear J.R. Martinez's message of resilience, optimism and the true value in making the most of every situation. Learn more about Martinez on his website.
