From their first day on the job, telecommunicators must be prepared to provide exceptional service to callers in crisis, many of whom are facing matters of life or death. To ensure the best-possible emergency response to the public, many states and agencies have adopted minimum-training standards for 9-1-1 professionals. Attend this special webinar to learn:

  • Why training standards are important, whether required by your state or not;
  • What resources are available to help your agency meet your state’s standards, or to develop your own; and
  • How you can ensure that your telecommunicators are receiving the training they need to succeed in 9-1-1.

Can't attend on the 12th? Register now and you will receive an email after the live presentation with instructions for accessing the on-demand webinar archive.

Presenters: Vicki Pickett, ENP • NENA | Kate Elkins • National 911 Program | Dan Koenig, ENP • Palm Beach County (FL) Public Safety Department

The NENA Partner in Education Recognition (PIER) Program honors PSAPs with an exceptional dedication to education. To receive a PIER certificate, an agency must demonstrate a commitment to improving the knowledge, skills, and abilities of all employees, from new hires to center leadership, through continuous and ongoing professional-development activities. An agency earns the PIER certificate by meeting eligibility requirements and by submitting an application with supporting documentation. PIER-certified PSAPs can maintain their status by recertifying every four years.

Washington Briefing

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Office of Emergency Medical Services announced that Brian Tegtmeyer, ENP, assumed the role of National 911 Program Coordinator effective May 9, 2022.

Tegtmeyer brings more than 26 years of experience in the field of public safety communications to the position.

"NHTSA’s long-term commitment to supporting 911 systems continues with the selection of Brian as the new coordinator for the National 911 Program," said Gam Wijetunge, director of the Office of EMS. "His deep knowledge of 911 systems and history of working within the 911 community, at a state, regional and national level is the experience needed to collaborate on updating and improving 911 across the nation."

"NENA congratulates Brian on his new role as NHTSA’s 911 Program Coordinator," said NENA's CEO, Brian Fontes. "He has a proven track record as an innovator and leader in the 9-1-1 space, and we look forward to working with him to advance Next Generation 9-1-1 and improve 9-1-1 service nationwide. NENA also thanks Brian’s predecessor, Laurie Flaherty, for her decades-long commitment to public safety and the exceptional job she did at the National 911 Program Office."

The Office of EMS and the National 911 Program—housed within the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at the U.S. DOT—encourage 9-1-1 and EMS professionals to provide public-safety feedback about its annual Highway Safety Grant Program.

NHTSA seeks feedback on how to reduce disparities, increase community participation and implement NRSS in its formula grant program. The grant program awards more than $630 million annually in Section 402 State and Community, Section 405 National Priority Safety Programs, and Section 1906 Racial Profiling Data Collection grants to the states, the District of Columbia, U.S. Territories and the Bureau of Indian Affairs to carry out highway safety programs within their jurisdictions.

On April 21, 2022, the Federal Communications Commission’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau (PSHSB) issued a Public Notice seeking to partner with alert originators to conduct localized, end-to-end Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) performance tests in the third quarter of 2022. The Public Notice provides additional details about the test and the criteria PSHSB will use in selecting testing partners.

The deadline for authorized WEA alert originators to express interest in partnering with PSHSB on these tests is May 22, 2022.  Parties may express their interest by submitting a filing in the Commission’s Electronic Comment Filing System and specifying "22-160" as the docket number for the proceeding.
