MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
If you are reading this article that means the world did not close up shop in 2012 as some people had predicted. It looks like we will be moving forward into 2013. During this past year we had some tragic experiences on the national level, from the shootings at a Colorado movie theater to the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy and the loss of 26 lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Even though these tragedies did not happen in our back yard, they had an impact on all of us.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The 2013 IAPD/IPRA Soaring to New Heights Conference will be held January 24-26 at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Chicago. The conference proudly features more than 150 educational sessions as well as 18 preconference workshops, an exhibit hall where more than 325 exhibitors showcase their latest and greatest products and services, and a variety of networking opportunities. Each year more than 4,200 of Illinois’ park and recreation professionals, elected and appointed officials/commissioners, and students make this conference the event to attend!

NEWS ABOUT MEMBERS
December 21, 2013 -- The NAEYC Academy for Early Childhood programs has renewed the accreditation status for the Hoffman Estates Park District’s (HEPD) Preschool at the Triphahn Center. The renewal is for a five-year term and is a voluntary assessment program. The Triphahn Center Preschool has been accredited since 2003.
