Advocacy News

As we approach the 10th anniversary of the Canadian Propane Association, I am ever mindful of our mandate to bring member value through advocating on your behalf. Whether it’s for improved government policies, fair regulatory treatment, adequate training or emergency response, our raison d’être is to be member focused.

The increased profile for the propane industry in the aftermath of the Canadian National Railway strike has resulted in a greater understanding by governments that, despite all the rhetoric and policy prioritizing of “electrification” as seemingly the answer to the nation’s energy needs, low-emission propane remains an important element of Canada’s energy profile.

The CPA has retained counsel to provide advice and intervene on members’ behalf at the Ontario Energy Board on new potential projects to expand access to natural gas in communities not currently connected to a natural gas distribution system. Michael Richmond of McMillan Vantage issued a letter in response to the OEB’s request for input, confirming the CPA’s intention to participate.

With the province’s seasonal load restricted period effective as early as March 1, 2020, the Canadian Propane Association asks all members to report any ticketing activity to Government Relations Director for Ontario, Marcelline Riddell.

The CPA is making progress in the development of an industry-led propane cylinder recycling program. Late last year, President and CEO Nathalie St-Pierre and Ontario Government Relations Director, Marcelline Riddell, met with Minister Yurek’s staff to outline the proposal and seek their help in brokering the plan with Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks staff.
