Supply Chain Monthly
Current News

CSCMP has been around for 57 years. Like modern supply chains, all organizations, even the non-profits, must iterate and evolve to compete and stay relevant. As the CSCMP incoming Board Chair for 2020, I am excited to share some of the initiatives CSCMP leadership is focusing on so the organization can continue to evolve and deliver upon our mission to serve today’s supply chain professional.

Connect, Educate and Develop.

That is who we are.

That is what CSCMP will be about in the future.

Let’s move CSCMP forward, evolving and leading the profession that helps tackle and solve big global supply chain challenges. We owe it to the next generation to make it even cooler to say, “I am a Supply Chain professional!”
During EDGE 2019, CSCMP sponsored two military veterans, Fabian Espinoza and Ted Arlauskas, to take part in the conference. In addition to expanding their supply chain and logistics network and learning more about supply chain during the educational sessions at the conference, both Ted and Fabian completed an SCPro™ Fundamentals Certification before attending EDGE.

Are you an employer or CSCMP member looking for great candidates? Continue reading to learn more about Fabian and Ted's journey to CSCMP and EDGE 2019, and if you are currently recruiting talent, find out how to contact them or other great candidates.

Will customer experience (CX) overtake price and product as the No. 1 brand differentiator? Which supply chain capabilities will be most important in delivering an enhanced CX? How are companies exchanging data with trading partners, and what is the quality of that data?

Adelante SCM and BluJay Solutions, in partnership with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), conducted an online survey of supply chain and logistics professionals to find answers to these and other pressing questions which was released to the CSCMP membership community. The report, “Focus on Customer Experience – Research on Supply Chain Priorities and Investments,” explores the key findings of this research.

Research and reports such as “Focus on Customer Experience – Research on Supply Chain Priorities and Investments,” is a member benefit.

Thank you to CSCMP Strategic Partner, Melanie Nuce, Senior Vice President, Corporate Development, GS1 US for providing this timely CSCMP Hot Topic during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

As we become more and more technology-reliant – including the use of AI, voice assistants, chatbots or other emerging innovations – it’s important for consumers to be able to trust data and the brands that provide it. Now is the time for supply chain partners to improve product digital identities to engender such levels of trust. Learn more about the three opportunities where standards can streamline the development of a collective digital identity and help new technology scale in a supply chain setting.

Thank you to CSCMP member, Aaron Terrazas, Director of Economic Research, Convoy, for sharing this Hot Topic with us.

Waste matters. For nearly every industry, waste contributes to higher costs. But in the freight industry, the stakes are even higher. In freight, waste means that more fuel is consumed, more carbon is emitted, and drivers spend more hours sitting idle.

One of the most common examples of waste in the freight industry occurs when truckers drive empty, typically because there are no nearby loads for the driver to pick up that are headed in the same direction as the driver. In the freight industry, these miles are referred to as empty miles, non-revenue miles or deadhead miles.

Regardless of what they are called, these miles mean that drivers are not earning money for being on the road and the economy-at-large pays more to move goods. Carriers account for their own expectations for empty miles when deciding how much they charge for any particular load, so everyone from shippers down to end consumers – and, of course, the environment – ultimately pay the cost of empty miles.

Thank you to CSCMP Corporate Member, Joshua Berg of Cybeta for contributing this Hot Topic during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

The majority of the world’s goods are shipped via ocean vessels, and as the maritime industry becomes increasingly reliant on technology and data, there is a notable increase in cyber risks. Convincing shipowners that information security is worth the investment is challenging because security is an investment for long-term profitability.
