Leadership
Value analysis is a systematic approach that focuses on enhancing the value of products, services, and processes by considering their cost, quality, and impact on outcomes. Value analysis can be a powerful tool for driving positive changes and improving patient care in healthcare. To become a catalyst for change in healthcare through value analysis, it is essential first to understand the current challenges and opportunities within the healthcare system. This includes identifying areas where value can be optimized, such as reducing costs, enhancing the quality of care, and improving patient outcomes.
As Executive Director of the Association of Healthcare Value Analysis Professionals (AHVAP), I have the great privilege of working alongside some of the most committed, visionary professionals in healthcare today. Our members are not only advancing the art and science of healthcare value analysis—they are transforming the way healthcare systems make strategic decisions, mitigate risk, optimize cost, and, most importantly, protect patient outcomes. And yet, despite our critical contributions, there remains one key challenge many in our profession still face: earning and sustaining a seat at the Executive Table.
The other day, my daughter shared her frustration over a mix-up at school. She was told she hadn’t taken a required exam. But she was certain she had—and even had the grade to prove it. After some back and forth, it was confirmed by her teacher: she had, in fact, taken the exam but also passed with flying colors.
Organizations are constantly pressured to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and deliver better outcomes in today's competitive landscape. One of the most effective tools for achieving these goals is a value analysis structured approach that evaluates products, services, or processes to ensure maximum value. But at the heart of this methodology lies a key ingredient: data.

Hello Industry Partners. AHVAP released its newest position statement on standardizing the product review process. I highly recommend you review the statement and start thinking about where your products fit into this. I have already seen some of the GPOs start to categorize their bids in such a way. If you can come to the table with the customer with some of the legwork completed that fits this structure, imagine how you would stand out against the others.

Well done to the team for developing this position statement.

Regards,

Dan Toomey, MBA, CVAHP

Industry News and Developments

Healthcare Digital
Medical device shortages are becoming an increasingly urgent issue, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), particularly in paediatrics, where specialised equipment for neonatal and young patients is vital. These shortages expose significant vulnerabilities in the supply chain, risking the safety and care of patients who rely on devices such as ventilators, hemodialysis catheters and tracheostomy tubes.

Campus Safety
A recent survey by Black Book Research has revealed alarming developments for U.S. healthcare providers, payers, and patients, as new tariffs implemented by President Donald Trump threaten to destabilize critical medical supply chains. The mounting trade war and additional penalties on imports are expected to lead to significant price hikes and potential shortages of essential medical devices and pharmaceuticals.

Express Healthcare
The healthcare landscape is evolving fast and supply chain management in this area is now a critical need, especially for companies in pharmaceutical distribution, medical devices, and healthcare consumables where the ability to track and manage the workforce has a direct impact on supply chain reliability, responsiveness, and profitability. With the rising scalability of technology integration in the healthcare ecosystem, the gap between supply chain strategy and execution especially in field operations can be filled.

Limiting the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to only N95 respirators late in the COVID-19 pandemic in Singapore healthcare facilities kept staff safe, reduced plastic waste and carbon emissions, and lowered related costs, a JAMA Network Open study concludes. The National Centre for Infectious Diseases in Singapore–led quality-improvement study evaluated the use of PPE and monthly COVID-19 rates among medical, allied, ancillary, and administrative staff at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and in the community before and after PPE de-escalation.

While some hospitals have seen modest improvement in their financial performance over the past couple of years, health systems are facing more cost pressures. Hospitals continue to see expenses rise faster than the broader rate of inflation, including growing labor costs, according to a new report the American Hospital Association released Wednesday. Federal reimbursements aren’t keeping up with expenses. Hospitals are seeing more friction with Medicare Advantage plans, and more frustrations with obtaining approval from insurers for payments and treatments.

Medcity News
In recent years, hospital breaches have dominated headlines and board-level discussions, shining a harsh light on cybersecurity and privacy vulnerabilities within clinical settings. Ransomware attacks targeting hospitals are becoming a daily threat, locking patient records, disrupting care delivery, costing institutions millions, and causing physical harm and death to patients. Yet, these incidents and targets are only the tip of the iceberg.
