The San Pedro Harbor ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles together handled container volumes totaling just over 1.3 million TEUs in May, an increase from a year ago of 3.2 percent.

APM Terminals Mobile will add two new super-Post Panamax STS cranes and expand the container yard by 20 acres as part of a $40 million infrastructure investment to increase the busy terminal’s capacity from 350,000 to 475,000 TEUs annually. Port Manatee is adding a 2-acre cargo pad to support storage of prilled sulphur, a new commodity for the Florida Gulf Coast port.

Pasha Hawaii’s newly launched LA-Hawaii Express (LHX) vessel service provides the islands with increased frequency and more capacity to support the growing Hawaii economy. The direct service offers two vessels that will call Los Angeles every Wednesday and arrive in Honolulu every Sunday. Maersk Line is coming to the Port of Jacksonville. The carrier’s decision to add a weekly service through JAXPORT’s Blount Island Marine Terminal starting in July 2015 means nine of the world’s top 10 global container carriers now offer services at the Northeast Florida port.

Carnival Magic will be homeporting at Port Canaveral sooner than planned – in April rather than December 2016, joining the Carnival Valor and Carnival Sunshine in sailing from Central Florida on various Caribbean itineraries.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has selected former Los Angeles port executive Molly Campbell, PPM®, as director of port commerce. Ms. Campbell will replace retiring Port Commerce Director Richard Larrabee, who will leave the agency after 15 years of overseeing the bi-state seaport complex. The Port of Vancouver USA has hired Ryan Hart as its chief external affairs officer, effective June 22.  Mr. Hart has served as district director for U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler since January 2011.

A Feasibility Cost Share Agreement (FCSA) signed June 15 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Virginia Port Authority commits each side to sharing the cost of evaluating the benefits of deepening of the Norfolk Harbor to a depth beyond 50 feet and the Elizabeth River’s Southern Branch to 45 feet.

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) board has approved a Business Plan and Budget for Fiscal Year 2016 of $667 million. Massport says the budget reflects its commitment to safety and security at its facilities, customer service at Boston Logan International Airport, supporting initiatives in neighboring communities, and improving the financial performance of maritime operations. Thanks in part to record container throughput, the Port of Virginia reports earning a $4.5 million operating profit in May, its best monthly financial result of the fiscal year that closes June 30.
