America’s waterborne commerce fell in 2013, down 1.4 percent from the year before to a four-year low of 2.74 billion short tons, according to data compiled and reported by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Waterborne Commerce Statistics Center in New Orleans. That includes both foreign (i.e., import/export) and domestic cargo shipped through and within the coastal, Great Lakes, non-contiguous, and inland waterway ports of the United States.

The March 23 sailing of two U.S.-flag Laker ships from the Port of Duluth/Superior signaled the start of the 2015 commercial shipping season at this end of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway system. The Georgia Ports Authority welcomed the largest ship ever to call on the Port of Savannah on March 18 when the 10,060 TEU ZIM Tianjin docked at Garden City Terminal.  The U.S. military landed 48 specialty Army helicopters and three Air Force helicopters at the Jacksonville Port Authority’s Blount Island Marine Terminal during a multi-day operation earlier this month. Three Ultra-Large Container Ships (ULCS) with nominal respective capacities of 13,000 TEUs each, called APM Terminals Pier 400 complex in the Port of Los Angeles between Feb. 22 and March 7, representing a combined total of 34,465 container moves over the period, including intermodal cargo of 28 double stack trains.

Port of Long Beach
The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) celebrated the completion of the Kawaihae Harbor Pier 2 Terminal Improvements Project in a dedication ceremony on March 18. Located on the "Big Island" of Hawaii, the harbor handled 812,918 short tons of mostly containerized cargo, 11,772 vehicles and 845 vessel calls in FY 2012-13.

The Greater Lafourche Port Commission (GLPC) has launched a new logo and brand identity for its South Lafourche Leonard Miller Jr. Airport, complete with a new entryway sign. The new logo and branding are designed to give greater prominence to the port commission’s airport and its surrounding industrial park.

MSC Cruises’ first Seaside class vessel will sail Caribbean itineraries year-round from PortMiami beginning in December 2017. Currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, the 154,000 ton MSC Seaside with a length of 1,060 feet and beam of 135 feet will accommodate up to 5,170 passengers plus 1,413 crewmembers. The Port of Montreal's cruise operations have again won recognition by Cruise Insight magazine, this time with a Best Turnaround Destination award.
