New York/New Jersey: Port Authority Honored For Support of Maritime Educational Institution

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey was recognized for its exceptional support and investments to a hands-on educational institution for maritime students with the presentation of the Captain Award by the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School of the New York Harbor Foundation. Port Authority Executive Director Pat Foye accepted the award at this year's Harbor School Awards Dinner on March 18.

Last May, the port authority announced that it would partner with regional maritime educational institutions to launch the Two States, One Port campaign to promote the study of regional harbor and port issues while also supporting the restoration of the Lettie G. Howard, a 121-year-old fishing vessel. The vessel serves as a hands-on educational institution for high-school maritime students, who come from a diverse student population from throughout the region.

New York Harbor School students cultivated skills in managing the Lettie when they restored the vessel in 2013. Students played a major role in the restoration, including repainting cabins and re-rigging the masts following a critical professional overhaul of the ship's main mast and keelson — a below-water beam that fastens to the keel for added strength and rigidity.

In addition, the port authority has taken students on tours to enlighten them about the day-to-day operations at the port and hired students as interns.

"The port business in New York Harbor is responsible for nearly 300,000 jobs in the region and experiencing strong growth, so it's critical that we expose today's youth to the working waterfront so that they can be prepared for future jobs in the maritime industry," said Mr. Foye. "We believe the assistance we've provided to this institute have helped mold young men and women for future careers in the maritime industry."

The Harbor School opened in September 2003 as New York City's only maritime high school and seeks to graduate students equipped with the skills and experience to become tomorrow's port industry managers.

New York Harbor School's mission is to provide a college-preparatory education built on New York City's maritime history, and particularly one that instills in students the ethics of environmental stewardship and the skills associated with careers in the marine science industries.

Graduates have continued their studies at top universities including SUNY Maritime, Roger Williams, and Stony Brook University. Others have gone on to careers as officers in the U.S. Merchant Marine, commercial divers, and members of New York's maritime community.
