Import volume at top U.S. containerized retail merchandise importing ports is expected to increase 3.5 percent in May as negotiators prepare to begin talks on a new contract for West Coast dockworkers, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released May 7 by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates. The Port of Montreal performed well in 2013 despite difficult economic conditions, President Sylvie Vachon told stakeholders at the port authority’s annual meeting on May 13. The Port of Virginia experienced across-the-board gains in April by all cargo categories, including a double-digit job in TEU throughput, giving the port its third-best month ever.

AAPA, port authority members and their stakeholders, and industry partners hit the ground running this past week during Infrastructure Week 2014 creating awareness for the importance and value of infrastructure in the United States. Tying into the national campaign, #RebuildRenew, AAPA created a social media campaign called "Infrastructure Delivers" designed to highlight the importance of our nation’s infrastructure with regard to the economy, imports, exports, jobs and household income. The campaign reached thousands of people including the media, legislators, government officials and the general public who heard our message loud and clear.

 Chiquita Brands International Inc. is returning its shipping operations to the Port of New Orleans after a nearly 40-year absence. Beginning in first quarter 2015, Chiquita plans to ship 30,000 to 39,000 TEUs of imported bananas and other fresh fruit, plus 30,000 to 39,000 TEUs of various outbound cargos through New Orleans annually.

 Two brand new post-Panamax cranes departed Shanghai May 7 for Port Freeport (TX), where they are due to arrive in July. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has permitted construction of the Port of Houston Authority's Bayport and Barbours Cut channel improvement projects and approved the federal assumption of maintenance of the channels once construction is completed. Congresswoman Corrine Brown (D-FL), Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown and a host of other federal, state and local leaders on May 12 gathered for a golden spike ceremony to mark the start of construction on the Jacksonville Port Authority’s Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF) at Dames Point.

The Port of Long Beach announced May 13 the award of education scholarships totaling $43,500 to 28 local high school and college students. Port Saint John is contributing $75,000 to the Saint John Fire Department’s (SJFD) training center. The funds will support an emergency service building that offers training to SJFD personnel, other municipalities and businesses. International Paper’s growing cargo volumes at the Port of Virginia are driving job growth in the maritime industry and that growth has led the company to become the first in the state to receive money from The Port of Virginia Economic and Infrastructure Development Grant Fund.

Clarkson's Register is a comprehensive guide to tanker vessels of all sizes and classifications. These include VLCC and ULCC crude oil carriers, general purpose tankers, naval auxiliaries, combined carriers, and vessels specifically designed to handle chemicals, asphalt, methanol, or wine. The Tanker Register consists of a review and analysis of the 2013 tanker market. The Register reveals that as of January 1, 2014, the world tanker fleet consisted of 5,820 vessels with total deadweight capacity at an all-time high of more than 501.9 million metric tons. On order were 61.5 million tons of capacity and a total of 666 vessels in all size ranges, including 30 crude oil carriers with an average deadweight capacity of 320,627 tons.
