James T. Edmonds, a long-serving chairman of the Houston Port Commission, passed away Sunday, May 10, at the age of 69.

A native of Wichita (KS), he grew up in Los Alamos (NM) and after graduating with a degree in government from Abilene Christian University, served first as an executive assistant to Houston Mayor Louie Welch and then as an administrative assistant to Texas Gov. John Connolly.

He subsequently became a consulting principal with KPMG-Peat Marwick and was a founding partner of the investment banking firm of Masterson, Moreland, Sauer & Whisman, Inc. (now First Southwest Company) before becoming president of Edmonds & Company, a business consulting firm.

Mr. Edmonds was first appointed to the port commission by the Harris County Commissioners Court in October 1996 and then served as chairman from June 2000 to January 2013.

In a statement, the port authority said: "The maritime industry lost a true leader with the passing of Jim Edmonds. He served with dedication and distinction at a time of tremendous growth for one of the nation’s busiest ports. Our thoughts are with his family and friends."
