The largest container ship ever to call at a North American port arrived at the Port of Los Angeles on Saturday, December 26. Delivered by its Chinese builder to the French shipping line CMA CGM earlier in the month, CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin is 1,300 feet long, 177 feet wide and has container capacity of nearly 18,000 TEUs.

The Cruise Industry Charitable Foundation (CICF), a national non-profit dedicated to funding programs that improve the quality of life in the communities served by the cruise industry, has donated a total of $20,000 to three South Boston non-profit organizations, the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) announced December 22.
 
 
   
Eric LaBrant was sworn in December 28 as a Port of Vancouver USA commissioner. He was elected in November to fill the seat previously held by Commissioner Nancy Baker.
 
Under the budget approved last month by its board of directors, the Port of Cleveland will continue to make strategic capital investments in maritime operations in 2016, including a new warehouse, infrastructure maintenance and replacement of equipment. Financing will come from $6.4 million in outside grants leveraged by $1.3 million of port cash.
 
 
   
An independent analysis conducted by the Journal of Commerce (JOC) recently named the Port of Baltimore and its Seagirt Marine Terminal the most efficient port and container terminal in the country during the first six calendar months of 2015. Seagirt averaged 75 container moves per hour per berth, according to JOC. 

Germany’s waterborne container trade fell 2.0 percent from a year ago during the first half 2015, reports the federal statistics agency Statistische Bundesamt. Even steeper volume declines were recorded by trade with its three leading container cargo markets – China, Russia, and the United States.

As part of efforts to enhance the waterfront experience through public art, San Diego’s board of port commissioners has approved artist concept proposals for three art projects to be installed in conjunction with the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina’s $200 million redevelopment project. The proposals will fulfill the Port of San Diego’s "Tenant Percent for Art" requirement.
