Last year the Frederick County planning staff recommended removing 566 acres designated for extractive mining from the Northeast Land Use Plan (NELUP). However, the County Planning Commission “expressed concern that the removal might be government overreach and result in potential losses to the county’s tax base”.
Earlier this month, following a reversal in the planning staff recommendation that reinstates the 566 acres extractive mining, the Planning Commission now supports the draft plan.
Details can be found in this March 4 article in the Winchester Star.
When removing extractive mining from the comprehensive plan was brought before the Planning Commission in December, VTCA sent a letter to all the members of the Planning Commission in support of keeping mining in the NELUP.
The NELUP draft will go before the Board of Supervisors for comments on April 12.
