According to MSHA, there have been 12 fatalities in the mining industry so far this year; six fatalities in January, two in February and four in March. Fortunately, there have been no fatalities in either April or May of this year.

Of the listed fatalities, six took place in coal mines, three in sand operations, two in metal mining and one in aggregate mining. The causes of the fatalities are related to powered haulage, machinery, fall off roof or falling material, slip and fall, and drowning.

The rate of mining fatalities is on the same pace as 2021 where there were a total 12 mining fatalities in the United States. For all of 2021, there was a total of 37 fatalities suffered by the mining industry, up from 29 in 2020. The record low in mining fatalities was in 2019 with 27 mining related fatalities.

Virginia has not experienced a mining related fatality since 2018.
