We have a lot to talk about this month. Member congratulations, Fall Summit, Cigna update, and much more. Take a minute to read about all the exciting things happening in the VPTA.

The VPTA Communications Committee would like to welcome our new Communications Chair, Dr. Jessica To-Alemanji.

After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BS in Health Education, Dr. To-Alemanji obtained her MSPT and transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Marymount University and her Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Science at George Mason University.

As a practicing clinician, business owner, consultant and educator, Dr. To-Alemanji has developed a strategic perspective and deep understanding of the healthcare system. She was the owner and founder of a private physical therapy practice specialized in treating patients with neurological conditions. Additionally, Dr. To-Alemanji has educated and mentored young physical therapy professionals at local universities like Marymount University, Howard University and George Washington University, and advocated for advances in physical therapy services by lobbying on Capitol Hill to address bills related to Medicare Regulations.

Currently, Dr. Jessica To-Alemanji owns a consulting company that provides consultation, education, and mentorship to Young Entrepreneurs and treats patients at INOVA Mt. Vernon Hospital.

Terrified of your next hire? Tired of begging doctors for more referrals? Want to know the key metrics successful PT owners use to accelerate financial growth?

Being a PT practice owner in today’s world isn’t easy. You are pulled in so many directions from patient care, mentoring staff, handling payroll, focusing on marketing, dealing with payor contracts and trying to balance all of this AND spend quality time with your family.

Do yourself a favor ….

It is election time again!  The nomination period is over, but there is still time to get involved and be slated as a candidate for state and district positions in the VPTA. It is important to note that having contested elections strengthens our organization. We need enthusiastic leaders to further the cause of the VPTA, protecting our practice and how we treat our patients. Aside from the obvious benefit of giving back to our profession, as a leader in the VPTA there are personal benefits as well. Professional networking with other committed PTs in the state can further your practice. In addition, this opportunity allows for you to hone your leadership skills which has positive carry over into both your professional and personal life. Also, as a VPTA leader you are involved in the decision making process in terms of shaping and protecting our profession.

Virginia was well represented at the House of Delegates, held this year in Orlando FL from June 24-27. There was a very full agenda, most of which was heard, debated, and decided.

The House opened with an address from President Dunn. Her address is posted on the APTA website and if you have yet to hear it, it is well worth a few minutes of your time. She helped set the tone for a productive House session and inspired us all to serve passionately as we work towards our vision.

Student News

On the first day of the Federal Advocacy Forum, I was excited to see such a sincere interest in advocacy in the physical therapists, physical therapy assistants and students attending from 48 states. It was a privilege to be one of more than 70 students present. I was immediately energized by the impact each piece of the forum seemed to have on everyone surrounding me. From the “Town Hall” on Sunday evening to house visits on Tuesday afternoon, each moment provided opportunities for personal and professional growth.

As a PT school applicant, I wrote countless drafts of essays about professionalism in the context of being a DPT student. I dissected my perspective on professionalism and thought intently and thoroughly about the APTA Vision Statement, stated above. However, it was not until I witnessed the very process that adopted the APTA Vision Statement, the APTA House of Delegates, that I understood the gravity of the adoption of this vision statement.
District News
The Tidewater District is pleased to announce our 2018 programming! We are excited to offer more education, leadership, and service opportunities to students and clinicians in our area. See the District Facebook page (VPTA Tidewater District) and emails via District distribution list for parking passes, sign-ups and more information.

The Tidewater District would like to congratulate this year's Clinical Excellence Award winners – Derek Finn (ODU DPT), Jared Johnson (HU DPT), Clay Harrington (TCC PTA), and Elizabeth Callahan (RCHC PTA). Students are APTA members nominated by their clinical instructors for demonstrating superior patient care and professionalism in their final clinical affiliations. Students receive monetary awards to help pay for APTA membership upon graduation.

The Tidewater District had 32 clinicians at the Mission Gait "Gait Theory and Practice" course in Newport News on June 2 and 3. Thank you to Mission Gait for providing an excellent continuing education course, Pivot Physical Therapy for hosting and Hanger Clinic for sponsoring!

Buck Haney, PT, took advantage of the discounted registration fee for VPTA members at the June 14 CHKD Annual Pediatric and Adolescent Sports Medicine Update. This year's programming spanned a wide range of topics including pediatric inactivity, youth resistance training, sleep and sports performance, mindfulness, sports medicine apps, social media and the law and more. The conference was a true value at a great price and registration included breakfast and lunch. Save the date – next year's conference is scheduled for June 13, 2019!

On Saturday, June 9 at the University of Richmond, we screened Special Olympics athletes for about 6 hours. We had a total of 45 volunteers who included 12 PTs, 3 PTAs, and 30 Student PTs and PTAs from Mary Baldwin University, VCU, ECPI and Hampton University.
