Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe recently appointed IIAV member Jim Stokely to the Virginia Fire Program Board. Stokely has been in the insurance industry since 1973 and is currently with Welch, Graham & Ogden Insurance in Manassas, Virginia. He has also served as an active member of the Manassas Volunteer Fire Company for 42 years. He has held both line and administrative officer positions with the fire company.

Currently homeowner premiums are taxed with the funds dedicated to the state fire program. The Fire Program Board provides oversight to the spending of these funds and one seat on the board is dedicated to an insurance industry representative.

For the past two legislative sessions the fire fighter professionals have sought to increase the tax on homeowner policies with IIAV opposing the initiatives — first because the tax fund is tied to the increase in homeowner premiums so there is a on-going natural increase in funding and second, IIAV is concerned about the adequate distribution of the funds to the fire departments that need the funding.

"Stokely has ties with both the fire and insurance communities and perhaps he can bridge the concerns of both sides," noted IIAV President & CEO Bob Bradshaw. "Certainly we applaud Jim’s appointment and hope to have greater communications going forward."

More information on the fire program can be found HERE.

Why join a committee?
New ideas for your own agency...networking with other agents and owners....the first to know about association and industry news....a chance to weigh in on new services and programs that members want and need....the ability to shape the future of our industry. These are just reasons why independent agents across the state choose to get involved on a IIAV committee. Joining a committee is a terrific opportunity for new and experienced agents to learn more about the association and help direct how the association can best serve member agencies like yours.

It is important to know the difference between a Calendar Year Deductible "CYD" vs. a Plan Year Deductible "PYD" when buying health insurance. A CYD begins or resets on January 1st of each calendar year and ends on December 31steach year regardless of the renewal date of your policy. A PYD coincides with the renewal date of your policy. Therefore, if you have a PYD and your policy renews on June 1st then your deductible resets each June. Knowing your deductible structure will allow you to properly plan for your out of pocket health care costs.

E&O SPOTLIGHT
As noted in last month’s E & O Tip, most Virginia-based E & O cases are litigated in Virginia courts, either General District Courts or Circuit Courts. There are, however, a couple of exceptions to this practice.
