FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT AND CEO
We’ve all read news about the start-up, new insurance technology company, Lemonade. Recently there was press that Lemonade processed a claim in around 36 seconds. I think it was a coat left on a subway...but it was a loss and the claim turn-around-time put the industry in all abuzz. At any rate, Lemonade will soon be here in Virginia and it’s a competition about which independent agents should be aware.

In my capacity as a "technical consultant" for IIAV I get lots of "cards & letters" from our members seeking information on many different insurance topics. One topic that I am questioned on frequently is the 65 year old and older exemption to the Virginia insurance continuing education requirement. Applying for your exemption is simple. Go to www.virginiainsurancece.com and under the picture of the state capitol on the upper right, click on "Agent Handbook pdf." Then scroll down to page 15 and you will find the required form to send to Pearson along with all of the necessary instructions for completion and mailing (or emailing). Call me if you have questions!

What’s your fast food guilty pleasure?

Don’t say the Outback or the Olive Garden. Those aren’t fast food technically. Those are sit down restaurants. Those aren’t guilty pleasure. I’m talking about the place you go when you’re alone on a business trip. The place you where you only use the drive thru. The place that serves food you eat in the car on a road trip.

For me, that’s Taco Bell. I just can’t quit the Bell.

I make terrible food choices there, ordering multiple items even though I know they’re all constructed from the same seven ingredients served from a squirt gun strong enough to deliver beans.

McDonald’s doesn’t feel that way. I’ll sit in a McDonald’s and not worry if anyone sees me. I don’t eat McRibs, because I’m not crazy, but I never feel shame about an egg McMuffin. Recently though, I saw something in their parking lot that surprised me.

Find out how this relates to you and your agency. He makes a fantastic point.

IIAV MEMBER RESOURCES

We all want to be more productive – and there are 24 hours in the day. No matter who you are, we’re all equal in the amount of time we have.

The world is moving at an incredibly fast pace, and there’s no question that we’re all feeling it. Sometimes we all need to stop. Breathe. Let your mind take a break.

Calm does just that. Try it – visit the website and you’re instantly transported to tranquility. (No really – try it.) Skeptical? Study after study shows us that not only does pausing throughout the day allow your brain to rest, but it improves productivity, focus, and sleep, and decreases anxiety and negative thinking.

Many insurance plans offer coverage for out-of-network providers. However, be very careful about using an out-of-network provider as you will likely receive a balance bill from that provider. A balance bill is the difference between the insurance carrier’s usual, customary, reasonable "UCR" payment to an in-network provider and the out-of-network providers full fee. An out-of-network provider does not have to accept the insurance carrier’s UCR as an in-network providers does, as full payment. Therefore, the out-of-network provider can bill the patient for the difference between the insurance carrier’s UCR payment and their full fee, which depending on the service(s) may be hundreds to thousands of dollars. It’s important to know the limitations of your provider network.
