As the summer construction season kicks into high gear, it's not just our projects that are growing – our teams are too. Construction spending fell for the third month in a row in April, declining 0.4 percent from March and 0.5 percent from a year earlier – the first year-over-year decrease since April 2019, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of a new government report.

Private developers scrapped more projects in May than in any other month on record, according to the latest data from Cincinnati-based ConstructConnect.

The Project Stress Index, a measure of construction projects that have been paused, abandoned or have a delayed bid date, increased 11.4% in May. That figure puts project stress 22.8% above 2021 baseline levels, said Devin Bell, associate economist at ConstructConnect.

Issued on 30 May, the Permitting Technology Action Plan outlines minimum digital standards that federal agencies must implement before the end of the year, with direct impact on how National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) environmental reviews – and related permits – are processed. Backed by US President Donald Trump’s April order, the reforms apply to a wide range of infrastructure projects involving roads, bridges, mines, factories, power plants and more.

Construction sector employment increased by 4,000 positions in May as rising wages enabled the industry to add workers more rapidly than other sectors, according to an analysis of new government data from the Associated General Contractors of America.

Sentry’s 2025 C-Suite Stress Index, a national survey of 1,000 C-suite leaders, offers a snapshot of what’s weighing on U.S. executives. The report highlights their stressors and those stressors’ impact on planning, people and priorities. The takeaway? Risks like the economy, labor and supply chain are a significant source of stress—and business leaders are taking action as they eye growth.

Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer told congressional leaders last week that a slimmed-down OSHA would be just as effective as the current version in keeping the country’s workers safe.
Chavez-DeRemer underlined President Donald Trump’ s goal of eliminating what she called waste and abuse in federal government spending and answered questions June 5 from the House Education and Workforce Committee on topics vital to construction, such as OSHA’s budget and heat safety standard.

Due in part to changing workforce demographics, costs associated with workplace injuries are climbing, even while the number of injuries continues to decline, according to a June 3 report from workers’ compensation insurer Travelers.

One of the factors affecting workplace injuries has been a continuous job churn over the past five years, Travelers noted. This has created a steady stream of new employees — a group considered among the most vulnerable to injury, the company said.
