As the summer construction season kicks into high gear, it's not just our projects that are growing – our teams are too. Across the Commonwealth, AGCVA members are welcoming a new wave of talent through summer internship programs, apprenticeships and full-time entry-level roles. These young professionals are more than just extra hands-on deck; they represent the future of our workforce.
Investing in emerging talent is not only critical to addressing the ongoing labor shortage – it’s also a strategic opportunity to shape the values, skills, and culture of the next generation of builders.
Why Internships and Early Career Opportunities Matter
Virginia contractors need over 270,000 craft professionals through 2026.
Engaging students early – through hands-on experience and exposure to real job environments is one of the most effective ways to spark long-term interest in construction careers.
Well-structured internships and early career programs:
• Provide practical, real-world experience
• Help students understand career pathways from trades all the way through senior management roles
• Build soft skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving
We are excited about the work we are doing to expand and strengthen our AGCVA Student Chapters, community colleges, technical schools and workforce development centers that will lead to more opportunities for internships and hiring.
If your company is interested in launching or expanding a student engagement program or looking for support when adding entry level talent, AGCVA offers support through:
• Partnerships with local CTE programs and technical schools
• Tailored classroom outreach resources
• Member networking and mentorship events
• Leadership development programs
Let’s work together to build a pipeline of capable, passionate and prepared workers – and ensure the future of construction is strong, safe and sustainable.
