AGCVA's District Officers Council: A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats

You serve as the chair of District Officers Council. Our members identify a great deal with their local districts, which brings a unique element to our structure as a state organization.  What do you feel is the most significant benefit that AGCVA members statewide have as a result of these leaders meeting regularly?

There is always strength in numbers. Because the leaders of all districts are meeting regularly, AGCVA members have access to new ideas for programs and events.  Each district benefits from learning about the successes or challenges other districts are experiencing and we are all able to benefit from one another.  The sharing of ideas for not only the many events AGCVA districts are offering, but all of the many benefits districts offer our members, as well as ways increase and retain members are all made possible by these important conversations.

What is something you have learned about AGCVA members or the organization itself due to your involvement with the association?

There are so many things that I don’t think members realize that AGCVA does with regard to the legislative part of our construction industry. AGCVA is a leader as we work diligently to guide Virginia lawmakers to create new policies and laws that will strengthen our industry.  We work year-round, meeting with legislators to help them better understand what it is that may or may not need to be changed in our industry.  We do this on behalf of our members so that lawmakers have the necessary knowledge to make the best decisions possible during the General Assembly session each year.  AGCVA is represented on many committees to help shape policy and offer our position regarding proposed bills is often sought out when determining policy. This is a tremendous benefit to all AGCVA members, but the extent of which many of our members are not completely aware of.

What might you recommend to someone who is a new AGCVA member or who has not been as engaged?  What’s the best way to start?

Reach out to your district president; they can help you to learn about what opportunities are coming up that you might be interested in.  Join your district meetings - this will give you the chance to get to know some of the other members from your area, as well as meet those in leadership positions.  It will also help you understand what your district is doing locally as well as learn about other events, programs, and services going on across the state.
