“Team Up, We are Better Together"
I am honored to follow Robert Lee as your 2019 State Chairman. Robert is the epitome of a Southern Gentleman and I have enjoyed serving as his wingman whether we have been bending elbows on the legislative front or simply toasting others for a job well done!
33 years ago, my wife, Charlene and I attended our first AGC Va. Convention. Little did we know that my journey in the construction industry would lead me to stand before you today as the first subcontractor to serve as AGCVA Chairman.
Serving as a State officer over the last two years has been an eye-opening experience to say the least. Exposure to the National AGC by attending the National Leadership training in DC has revealed how much of a VOICE the AGC actually has regarding national policies and politics.  I encourage you to get someone in your firm more involved.
The AGCVA held its Annual Convention at The Greenbrier Resort on January 24-27, 2019.
Nearly 600 attendees saw the 2019 officers and board installed.  Our new officers are:
Chairman:  Bruce Tibbets – EMC Mechanical Services
Vice Chairman:  Kirk Adams – Riddleberger Brothers Inc.
1st Vice Chairman:  Trip Smith – MEB Contractors
Immediate Past Chairman:  Robert Lee – English Construction

There was great networking  at the “Centennial Celebration” on Friday night.  Informative sessions on safety, recent construction court cases, workforce development, business planning and advocacy on state and federal issues.

Legislative & Legal

AGCVA has made it easier for members to contact legislators on key issues.  Please participate in the CALL to ACTION ALERTS you receive.  It is a a quick process for members to contact legislators.
Ever since the time of the pharaohs, whenever a large project was built it’s been difficult, if not impossible, to know exactly how many people were on site, when they arrived, when they left, and where they all were. According to McKinsey & Co, the manufacturing industry has realized 3-5% annual productivity improvements every year for the past 20 years. At the same time the construction industry has realized average annual productivity improvements of -0.35%. The result, 70% of projects run late and 99.9% of projects over $1B are late and over budget.  Fortunately, McKinsey & Co goes on to state that this can be solved and just a few actions can make an enormous difference.  By investing in the appropriate technologies and onsite execution, 50%-60% operating improvements can be gained with the result being as much as a 100% improvement in a construction company’s net income.

Virginia has made great strides in career and technical education but important work remains. Thank you to CTE leaders from Southwest Virginia for visiting the Capitol.

Speaker: Megan Healy, Chief Workforce Advisor to Governor Northam
The AGCVA kicked off the session with an overview of their recently launched workforce solutions initiative - Build Your Future Virginia.  Members were able to see the exhibit booth and take a virtual tour of the website.  This campaign was created as a resource hub to showcase career pathways in construction and to connect people to reputable construction companies.

Safety

The Roanoke District held a Business Meeting focused on the BEST Program.  Members learned the benefits of the Virginia BEST program.  AGCVA CEO Gordon Dixon, DOLI, Milford Stern along with Matthew Rutrough of Procon were speakers at the program.  Matthew is not only an AGCVA member but is a member of the Virginia BEST Program review board.  He provided an excellent overview of the program and the review process.

National AGC Safety Awards (NASA) program has been an ongoing effort since 1991 to offer AGC members an opportunity to evaluate their safety record. NASA compares an AGC member’s safety record with other AGC members according to the member size and construction type. Additionally, NASA provides a great opportunity for members who have excellent safety records to compete for nationally recognized awards. Roanoke-based Branch & Associates Inc., a major construction management firm, has changed its name to Branch Builds Inc.
“This rebranding represents the strong clarity we have around not only the amazing buildings for which we’re most often recognized, but also the many intangible things we must build to have successful projects; things like teamwork, transparency, trust, commitment, and accountability, ”  Craig Floyd, the president of Branch Builds, said in a statement.
