With the winter months comes scheduled maintenance and repair for asphalt plants in Virginia. While operations are on hold until the warmer months, companies have a chance to address issues at the asphalt plant that couldn’t be taken care of during the busy season and perform the yearly maintenance necessary to keep the plant running efficiently during the paving season. Whether cleaning out the drum, servicing the drag conveyor, or replacing silo cone liners, there are many non-routine and unfamiliar tasks to be completed this time of year. With these tasks, many risks must be addressed through proper training, planning, and risk assessment.

Environmental Matters

This environmental update will be the last monthly update before we switch to a quarterly distribution. Providing the updates quarterly will allow us to provide a deeper analysis of the issues of interest to the asphalt industry.  Not to worry, we will still provide immediate alerts to members of significant environmental updates that arise between the quarterly distributions.

State & National News

NAPA’s Quality in Construction Awards Program recognizes pavements constructed in sustainable and/or innovative ways. Each pavement has to qualify for an award in the Quality in Construction categories — Airport Pavements, General Pavements (under 50,000 tons), or Highway Pavements (over 50,000 tons). An optional section on the nomination form allows applicants to highlight the adaptability and sustainability of the asphalt used on the project. The Green Award (t) is earned by contractors for their use of sustainable practices in the construction of an asphalt pavement. Congratulations are in order for two Virginia C\companies who earned 2018 awards.
