COMPOST USE
Hot on the heels of last month's sweeping national plastic pollution proposal, there's a new federal waste bill in town. The Zero Waste Act, introduced by Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. as a "key part of the Green New Deal," would provide up to $250 million in funding for "zero waste" initiatives - including organics recycling infrastructure, e-waste recycling or reuse, source reduction and market development.
Kroger is asking the Environmental Protection Agency to set industry standards that would eliminate food waste. The head of the EPA met with company leaders today to hear what the roadblocks are. The grocery chain says it wants to end hunger in communities it serves and eliminate waste by 2025.
Conventional agriculture was targeted in the most recent repor tfrom the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in which a panel of 100 scientists concur not only that the food system contributes 37% of greenhouse gases, but also that a more sustainable agriculture can help address global warming.
Summer music festivals bring out huge crowds of people who celebrate, revel and generate tons of waste. To make these multi-day events more sustainable, several festivals across the county have committed to making waste diversion part of the package.

Congratulations to the team at BioCycle, who not only publish the USCC’s official magazine with JG Press but have also led in analysis, data collection, events and expansion of the compost industry for 60 years! All members should read their July issue cover to cover to see how the compost manufacturing industry has evolved over the years and learn about early trailblazers! Thank you, BioCycle!

It is with great sadness that we note the recent untimely death of Trish Andre of Andre Farms, Ohio, who was killed in a car accident. Trish was an agronomist, a farmer, Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) and past Extension Advisory Committee member and chair. She was a passionate 4-H advisor of the Pettisville Ever-Ready 4-H Club, active in Wauseon FFA Alumni and volunteer for many things in her community with her husband Nate. Our thoughts are with the Andre family.
