Industry News and Advocacy

Independent contractor relationships are critically important to 3PLs of all sizes and specializations, so TIA closely monitors all regulatory developments related to this issue. TIA works to maintain up-to-date frameworks and guidance on labor issues on the Members Only side of the TIA website. TIA will also report on any efforts by Congress or the Department of Labor to make changes to the independent contractor tests laid out by the National Labor Relations Act (which governs activities related to union organization) and the Fair Labor Standards Act (which regulates employment relationships for contractors and employees, as well as minimum wage and overtime requirements).

TIA announced last week the appointment of three new vice presidents: Matt Mantione, CAE, to Vice President of Membership, Chris Burroughs to Vice President of Government Affairs and Will Sehestedt to Vice President of Government Affairs. The Association, with more than 1,700 members, is the leading organization devoted to the North American 3PL industry.

Rates are cooling off for refrigerated freight across the country, but a few hot spots still remain. Out west, California is quiet but competition for trucks can be fierce in the Twin Fall, ID market.

TIA, WIT, and Truckstop.com are seeking nominations for the 2019 Distinguished Woman in Logistics Award (DWLA). The award is intended to acknowledge and honor the contributions and accomplishments of an outstanding individual acknowledged by her peers for achievement and leadership in the field of logistics in North America. By their commitment to their profession, desire to further the industry's success and participation in civic and community affairs, DWLA award winners exemplify role models for other women seeking or advancing careers in logistics.

Anyone may nominate a candidate by completing and submitting the nomination form by February 8. Forms can be found here.Contact Lana Nichols, Director of Programs, Women in Trucking Association, at Lana@womenintrucking.org if you have questions.
