Urge Your Senator to Support the National Hiring Standard

In June, more than 100 TIA members – a record number of attendees – met in Washington D.C. at the TIA 3PL Policy Forum. TIA members had the opportunity to meet with their respective senators and representatives and staffs to urge their support for the National Hiring Standard. Although the meetings were productive, more outreach needs to be done to ensure the National Hiring Standard becomes law.

As you know, 3PLs have essentially been deputized by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to determine which motor carriers are safe to use. FMCSA provides 3PLs with flawed data and statistics, leaving 3PLs to do the heavy lifting. Many TIA members employ compliance staff solely to sort through piles of data to determine (or guess) which carrier is or isn’t safe to tender freight. The current system is burdensome and costly for 3PLs. Worse, it’s endangering the lives of the public by allowing unsafe carriers on our nation’s highways.

The National Hiring Standard is the industry’s best solution to place the responsibility of safety where it belongs – with the FMCSA. If the FMCSA issues a motor carrier a license to operate, shouldn’t the Agency also confirm it has met the proper safety requirements to move freight? The National Hiring Standard does just that by requiring FMCSA to confirm the motor carrier is licensed, insured, and safe.

Right now, the U.S. Senate is discussing amendments that will be considered as part of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization. The House has already passed its version of the reauthorization, which included the National Hiring Standard. TIA needs you to act today to contact your Senators and support language championed by U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE).

Please click HERE to learn more and to contact your United States Senator. Tell them that you support the National Hiring Standard for motor carriers and that you need their help to include this important provision in the Senate version of the FAA Reauthorization.

The National Hiring Standard can provide a clear, simple, and certain solution for 3PLs. The time has come for FMCSA to be held responsible for determining the safety of motor carriers.

Call your Senator today and ask them to support the National Hiring Standard.
