TONL News & Updates

Thank you TONL Members. Information you have provided related to the definition of Nurse Leader is changing the literature on leadership in nursing. As an action item stemming from the 20/21 Strategic Plan, the TONL Board appointed a task team, comprised of volunteers, to create a definition for “Nurse Leader.” As well, the team was asked to create a plan for disseminating the name change from TONE to TONL.  The work of the task team began in the Fall of 2020. The task team began by reviewing feedback received from TONL members in response to a yearly TONL Member Survey.

From that work, TONL is pleased to announce the adoption of a Nurse Leader Definition which will be used to guide TONL in all aspects of operations.
The TNA/TONL HIT Committee completed a Statewide Study on Nurses' experience using electronic health records in 2015 and 2020 to examine the satisfaction of nurses across Texas with the electronic health record. Information obtained from the TNA/TONL HIT studies was presented by Susan McBride, Ph.D., as part of a symposium series convened by Columbia University School Biomedical Informatics focused on reducing the documentation burden on US clinicians to 25% by 2025. Dr. McBride and Dr. Tietz, (HIT TNA/TONL Team Researchers) have created an article update for the TONL Monthly on the 25X5 Initiative, An Initiative to Reduce Documentation Burden on US Clinicians by 75% by 2025.

Nurses Week is a special event celebrated each year honoring the contributions of nurses. This year’s celebration is like no other. Events preceding Nurse Week 2021 have been dominated by the pandemic which has affected the health, wellness, and economy of people worldwide. Nursing professionals have offered resources, often at personal expense to support individuals and communities throughout the COVID crisis. The response of selfless giving in the interest of others in need highlights the value and the dedication of nurses at home and across the globe.

TONL/AONL members are invited to participate with AONL, in  celebrating Nurses as Superheroes, Nurses Week 2021.

"Nurses are superheroes, answering the call every day to care for their community and patients. For over a year, nurses have been on the frontline fighting COVID-19. This National Nurses Week, AONL wants to turn nurse leaders into comic book superheroes. Share your favorite superhero pose or assemble your team of nurses and be transformed into a virtual comic that will be streamed on AONL social channels throughout National Nurses Week, May 6-12."

The shortage of nurses isn't just a complex issue; it's downright wicked. The ambiguity of the reasons behind the shortage prevents leaders from finding a definitive solution, instead requiring them to lead interventions as necessary.
